Forfarshire CC - 2012

Forfarshire CC are based at Forthill Sports Club in Broughty Ferry and run
four senior teams as well as junior cricket at five different age groups.

Season 2011 was highly successful for the club - Forfarshire finished in third place of the SNCL Premiership, Forthill were crowned champions of division one of the Strathmore & Perthshire Union and gained promotion and Forthill XI finished in third place of division two of the Strathmore and Perthshire Union and have also been promoted.

New for 2012 is the introduction of Forthill 2nd XI who will play in division three of the Strathmore & Perthshire Union and will mainly consist of young players making the transition from junior to senior cricket.

Junior cricket is a major part of the club, with training sessions organised by qualified coaches along with participation in all local and national league or cup competitions.

New members for all teams and age-groups are always welcome. Use the contact page to request more information, or just come along to one of the training sessions.

2011 AGM Report

A healthy crowd gathered for this year’s Forfarshire CC AGM which was held at Forthill on Wednesday 23rd November. Club President Rae McLelland oversaw proceedings from a top table shared with Treasurer Graeme McLelland and Secretary Gordon Black.

The president kicked things off with some relaxed reflections on a successful year for the club which saw the first team finish third in the Premier League, the second team winning the S&PCU First Division, the third team finishing third in S&PCU Division 2 and potted success at junior level. The treasurer then reported an improved financial situation but once again stressed the need for continued prudence and fund raising in equal measures.

Forfs Down Under - part 1

Here we follow the fortunes of the Forfs contingent who are currently on the other side of the world.

Craig Wallace carried on from his all expenses paid holidays in Namibia and Hong Kong by heading for Australia, where he is planning on playing some cricket up until Christmas and then heading on to New Zealand. Craig has managed to upset the locals in Oz by being selected for a regional 20/20 side after just getting there. The locals in question are unhappy that this young whipper snapper has landed on their shores and walked into the team ahead of guys who have been playing there for years. Even the local press has been carrying the story.

It would be like some young Aussie off spinner strolling into Forthill one day and Ted suddenly being dropped to give him a game. You could only imagine the uproar this would cause and one has to think that in the same scenario any young Aussie in Dundee would have to fear for his life - and at the very least expect to have his shoes glued to the floor and his clothes put up the flagpole. We are hoping that whoever Craig has replaced does not have Ted like tendencies or else we might have to have a whip round for new kit when he gets back.

Andy Wallace is also out in Oz, although unlike his brother he has secured some employment and is working as a super salesman for a sports marketing company. He is planning to play some cricket although no statistics are at hand yet. Andy has been to NZ to see the rugby World Cup on his way to Oz and also stopped off in Thailand on the way. It can only be assumed that he has enjoyed his trip thus far and will no doubt have some stories to tell.

Congratulations go to Craig and Andy’s parents on winning the lottery.

Graeme Black has also ventured down under for the winter. To date, reports seem to suggest that he has played some golf, done some jogging, been to multiple barbeques and little else. There seems to be little interest in cricket on his part so far. Sounds a bit like a typical Scottish summer for Blackie. Rumours abound that he is actually trying to break into the Guinness Book of Records as the man who can attend the most barbeques around the world without ever paying for anything. His Australian friends confirm he is doing well to date.

We are hoping to hear about the cricketing exploits of all of our explorers in the coming weeks and will report on any results and progress.

One ex-Forf who has been among the runs is former pro Tom Cooper. He has been in great from and scored 203 not out for South Australia against New South Wales along with other great scores. This form has been noted by the national selectors and this week he has been included in the 12 man Australia A squad for a game against New Zealand. Our best wishes go to Tom for this game and for the rest of the season.

We can inform Tom that the seagull population in Forthill Primary is returning to normal after the cull he carried out whilst here when hitting sixes on to the school roof.

Hopefully in the next episode of Forfs Down Under we will find out if Craig is still alive, if Andy has managed to sell anything, if Blackie has broken the BBQ record and if any of them manage to score a run between them.

League Reconstruction Update

The confusion has ended - hopefully!

After all of the shenanigans, votes and meetings; the confusion has ended and the new revised league set up for 2012 has been announced.
A new format of Eastern and Western “conferences” has been developed with Forfarshire finding themselves in the eight team Eastern Conference Premier Division alongside Arbroath, Carlton, Aberdeenshire, Grange, Watsonians, Heriots and Stoneywood Dyce. Saturday fixtures will be supplemented by a revamped Scottish Cup which will be initially played in a group format before proceeding to Sunday knock out games. Forfarshire are in a group alongside Ayr, Freuchie and Stenhousemuir who they will play home and away.

Full details of the new structure can be found on the Cricket Scotland website.
www.cricketscotland.com/newdomesticsetup

This seems like the best compromise possible for Forfarshire as it allows the first team to continue to play the highest level of club cricket in a Saturday league format. The lengthened Scottish Cup format may look a bit unwieldy and drawn out and time will tell if this will appeal to the players as much as the league fixtures on a Saturday afternoon.

The Strathmore and Perthshire Union set up can remain intact. This allows the second team to step back up into the Premier League in 2012 after their well earned promotion. Forthill will compete against Stoneywood Dyce, DHSFP, Mannofield, Huntly, Gordonians, Arbroath United, Meigle, Strathmore and Perth Do’cot (the newly formed club following the merger of Strathearn, Mayfield, Northern and Almond Valley). The third team has also been promoted after Arbroath XI decided to decline promotion. This will Forthill XI back in the First Division along with Kinross, Kinloch, Rossie Priory, St Modans, Norwood, Breadalbane, Coupar Angus, Dalnacraig and Perth Doo’cot XI.

This means that all three teams will be playing at the highest possible standard that can be attained under league rules. In addition and for the first time, the club has entered a Forthill Colts team into the SPCU Third Division with the aim of giving some of our up and coming youngsters competitive senior cricket on a regular basis.

It is certainly pleasing that the confusion has drawn to a close and we can now look forward to the 2012 season and hopefully some good weather and some great cricket.

Scotland Honours for Craig

Recent years have seen Ryan, Umair and Priyanaz all represent Scotland at national level - and now Craig has made the step up gaining his first honours when the Saltires played Hampshire at the Rosebowl on 29th August.

To some of us, it doesn’t seem that long ago that “young” Craig was donning the gloves for the third team and facing Strathmore Union legends such as Dougie Gourlay at Doo’cot Park. Often in these games he would play in the same team as his Dad – and sometimes even his Mum.
In these matches the batting and keeping talent was evident, but when behind the stumps he always got tired in the long 45 over games; and whilst his batting always looked nice he couldn’t usually get it off the square. His winters were spent eating chocolate and hoping for better things down Anfield way.

A few years later, a few gym sessions later and a few million throw downs later and things have changed just a touch…

After a life changing trip to Australia which saw the boy come back a man; and also saw him suddenly hitting it out of the park never mind off the square, he started to put in the graft that led to the national selectors sitting up and taking notice. This effort was rewarded at the tail end of this summer when Craig was deservedly selected for the national team and made his Saltires debut at the Rose Bowl against Hampshire, where he batted well before being run out and performed admirably behind the stumps.

This is indeed a long way from facing Dougie Gourlay and co, but I am sure Craig will acquit himself well and he has certainly earned his shot at the big time after all of the effort he has put into his game. It would certainly seem that the one constant in Craig’s life in recent years has been the eternal struggle to bring better days to the green fields of Anfield…..!!!!

And for the record he was always a better batter than his Mum.

Real Ale Festival Report

The inaugural Forfarshire Real Ale Festival was held at The Milton Inn, Monifieth over the weekend (9th-11th September) and with a great time had by all who attended, calls for the festival to become an annual event were numerous.

- The Festival as it Happened -
Friday:
Gleadhraich launched the Real Ale Festival at The Milton Inn with an entertaining ninety minutes of Celtic rock. If you weren't there, then video highlights are available here.

Saturday: The afternoon brought sunshine, a bouncy castle and kids faces painted in all manners as the Real Ale Festival entered it's second day. An hour long performance from Pressure gave way to Saturday's 'headline' act – Miss Nic Nevet who performed to the largest audience of the weekend on a pleasant Saturday evening to spend in the garden of the Milton Inn.

Sunday: Shipping Line opened the final day of the Real Ale Festival with a mellow lunchtime set that gave the perfect musical start to the day.
Havana Swing jazzed up the atmosphere later in the day for the assembled audience who all made the most of the final part of the Forfarshire Real Ale experience.

For those who attended and asked to take away the list of ales, a copy can be downloaded here.

Junior Prizegiving

Forfarshire’s Junior Section held their annual prizegiving at Forthill on Friday 2nd September to bring an end to a season that showed high levels of enthusiasm across all age-groups along with notable improvements in performances. Over 125 junior members participated in games or coaching throughout the season and for the first time an all girls game had taken place at Forthill. Another first was a cricket-themed birthday party held on the ground – and hopefully it won’t be the last.

The under 13 season was particularly encouraging, with six different batsmen contributing 30 or more on sixteen occasions and some of the under 13 squad have already played senior cricket for the club. The under 15s won three matches throughout the year, two of these in the last month of matches, so improvement over the season was evident. The under 18s won six out of nine games played and many of the side are regulars in the second or third team.

Certificates were presented to all kwik-cricket participants before individual awards were made.

2011 Prizewinners:
Most Improved Junior (Thistle Trophy) – Andrew Cameron
Most Promising Junior (John Adams Trophy) – Jack Hogarth
Broughty Ferry Round Table Trophy – Craig Wallace, Aman Bailwal & Priyanaz Chatterji
Dick Auchinleck Trophy – Samir Hill
Under 15 Batting Trophy – Scott Cameron
Under 15 Bowling Trophy – Jack Chinery
Under 13 Batting Trophy – Christian Robertson
Under 13 Bowling Trophy – Jack Hogarth

The John Adams award for the most promising junior has seen no less than eight of the previous recipients go on to represent Scotland at youth or senior level and the Thistle Trophy for the most improved junior carries many familiar names since it was first awarded over thirty years ago – with the current u13 coach (Ted) collecting the award in 1977.

Forthill XI Player of the Year – Adam Hill

Forthill XI marked the end of the season with a games and curry night at Forthill on Friday 2nd September. The Captain v Vice-Captain team games were curiously won jointly by Simmy snr and Chris, who holds neither position.

Simmy spoke of an encouraging season that had seen many excellent individual performances that have combined to see the team challenging for first place in recent weeks and still being in the hunt for promotion.

This season’s Forthill XI Player of the Year trophy was awarded to Adam Hill who has contributed just short of 500 runs along with 12 wickets in the season so far – and deservedly reached 100 for the first time just last weekend.

Ryan to Retire From Cricket

It has been announced today that Ryan Watson is to retire from all forms of cricket. Ryan has been a great servant to our club as a professional, amateur and coach; and has also given many hours supporting the club’s activities off the field.

He has been instrumental in our rise to prominence as a leading club in Scottish cricket and our thanks are due to him in many ways.

Only this week on the occasion of his Scotland debut, Craig Wallace paid tribute to the help that Ryan had given him in reaching that milestone. He has also helped with the development of many more of our promising youngsters.

Ryan will certainly be missed on the pitch. How could any team not miss the services of a cricketer who holds the record as Scotland’s most capped cricketer, holds the record as the highest ever run scorer in the SNCL and is in the top dozen all time wicket takers in the SNCL?

Ryan also had a glittering Scotland career which also brought huge honour and increased profile to Forfarshire Cricket Club.

Some will no doubt argue that with his fitness not in question and aged just 35 this is perhaps a premature retirement; however, with a young family and a new business venture it is perfectly understandable why Ryan has decided to call time on his playing career.

Hopefully he will still be able to spend some time at Forthill to support the juniors in particular. It would be a pity if his vast experience and outstanding coaching abilities were lost to the club – and more importantly to the game of cricket.

From a playing perspective; Ryan’s retiral gives the opportunity for someone else to come forward and captain the club and also to the emerging talents within the ranks to take on more responsibility on the field. We are sure they will relish this opportunity. However, there is no doubt that the void left by his retiral will be a very difficult one to fill.

Our huge thanks go to Ryan for the fantastic service he has given to Forfarshire Cricket Club over the years and we hope he will remain a part of our club for many years to come.

New Net Project

Forfarshire CC have launched a fundraising campaign to raise funds to build a new 3-lane state of the art practice facility. The new nets allow the high quality coaching that the club offers to continue in forthcoming years.

The club has invested many thousands of pounds in recent years to provide high quality coaching for all the senior and junior teams, and recent successes show the benefit of that effort. To continue this, and raise the standard of coaching offered even further, new net facilities are required to replace the ageing concrete nets.

A new net structure has been designed and costed that will comprise three bays to cater for the increased number of senior and junior cricketers that the club has been coaching in recent years. The cost of the project is approximately £45000 and grants have been identified for part of that amount, but the club needs to raise £14000 as soon as possible.

Sponsorship Suggestions:

If you have any suggestions of companies or individuals who would be interested in sponsoring the project, then please use the Contact Us page to email Ryan Watson, or our Sponsorship Convenor Gordon Walker. We hope every club member can suggest at least one company that might be willing to help.

If anyone requires more information on the project or any aspect of the sponsorship, click on Contact Us to email Ryan Watson.
