Match report
Normal service was resumed with the weather for our trip to McKane Park. Most of the journey through was spent in rain and it was still raining when we arrived. Parking at the ground was a little tricky as the finish line of the Tour de Fife had been setup on the rugby ground. There was enough time to watch Scotland play New Zealand in the T20 until a 37 over aside match was started. Bobby won the toss in his last game of the season before he heads off to New York for a couple of months.
Craig and Howie got us off to a good start, Wally hitting his first ball for 4 with his trademark shot over mid-wicket. Things were moving along nicely until Howie was bowled by a “good un” from Sharif that cut back sharply. Tony came and went quickly so it was left to the 2 teenagers to rebuild the innings. Just as the recovery got underway AB was undone by a slower ball. His claims afterwards of having picked it were met with a little suspicion by the rest of the team.
Bobby edged behind for 1, which put further pressure on Wally to go on and make a big score. Sadly not long after passing 50 Wally was run out and seemed happy to take the blame for the mix up. He showed excellent form passing 50 at better than a run a ball, so it was a disappointing end. Another 2 wickets fell for just 2 runs and at 134 for 7 any thoughts of a big total looked a long way off. Useful contributions from Dougie and Henry and an excellent 29 not out from Blackie in a tenth wicket partnership of 37 with Q saw us through to a more than useful 212 in the end.
Tea was taken in surely one of the ugliest clubhouses in Scottish Cricket. The teas got mixed reviews but generally “could do better” was the feeling. AB still managed a large plateful despite the quality and the 3 burgers he had earlier tucked away while the rest of us watched the wickets tumble.
The first ten overs went quite well with Kelbey picking up one of the openers to an outstanding catch from Henry diving low to his right. They had to try and pick up the run rate and manged to do this well in the next few overs. Umair then slowed things down with a couple of quick wickets. The pro took his time and never looked in much bother. A few too many four balls meant it was hard to maintain any pressure but it wasn’t helped by some sloppy fielding. Several chances went down and Henry was particularly unlucky not to pick up a wicket.
Blackie came on but wasn’t able to stem the run flow. The overseas amateur was intent on working as much on the leg side as possible. After completing a fifty off 46 balls Blackie had him trapped in front. By now the damage had been done and the 92 run partnership had moved them to 176, needing 36 off 6 overs. The pro started to play more positively and the bowling changes didn’t help. Kelbey wasn’t able to stop the runs either and they passed our total with an over to spare.
It was a disappointing display in the field and more dropped catches cost us. The fielding didn’t help the bowlers on occasions but there were a few too many bad balls bowled. Our total should have been higher if we’d managed to keep a few wickets in hand at the end. There was only one thing left for it – Nandos.
