Forfarshire Cricket Club Won 62 runs
Match report
It was a warm and sunny day as we left Forthill for the Midlothian town of Penicuik. The same team that had won the day before gathered for the first round of the Scottish Cup. It was a bit cloudier at the ground when we arrived but the lack of wind kept the temperature warm. The changing rooms aren’t the most generously proportioned so changing in shifts was required and extra care was needed to navigate through the sea of bags on the floor. Rhino won the toss and choose to bat first on a slightly green looking pitch. There was a bit of assistance for the bowlers at the start but Howie and Wally dug in with a fifty opening partnership. Wally was finding the middle nicely and hit a couple of sixes early on, one with the trademark flick. Howie was first out for 19 with an inside edge, boot then stumps shot.
The travelling support of Neily and Deano had returned from the shops with the necessary food and drink and were enjoying the warm weather. Rhino was playing in a less attacking manner than usual and looked set for a good score. Wally succumbed to a little frustration after missing out on scoring from a couple of balls in the over. He was lulled into trying another trademark shot but only managed to sky one to long on. AB started with a glorious drive over the top for four but inexplicably padded up to a floated Morton ‘bomb’ and found himself out leg before.
The loss of 2 quick wickets left us in a spot of bother, which got worse when Tony was out stumped. Kelbey and Rhino set about the rebuilding and put together a partnership of 38. Kelbs hit a few nice shots to the boundary in his innings of 27 from 28. Dougie didn’t hang around too long but Henry batted well for 27. Wickets fell regularly and Rhino fell 3 runs short of his fifty caught at deep square from a top edged sweep. Blackie did a great job taking us to a decent total with 18 from 16 and after Henry and Sam fell in consecutive balls Q had to see off a hat-trick ball before helping Blackie out.
With a total on the board and some help still for the bowlers we were confident from the start. The bowlers beat the outside edge several times and an early edge from Coleman flew through the vacant second slip area. The batsmen looked to be positive with their shots and advancing down the track. When Wally came up to the stumps to Q it proved to be too much of a distraction for Hussain who was out bowled behind his legs. Ramzan had a shaky start but Coleman continued in a positive manner.
Bowling changes at both ends brought wickets, Sam finding the edge of the bat to pick up the important wicket of Ramzan. A juggled effort from Wally was well held in the end. Henry was finding his rhythm and cleaned up Ruthven which meant Coleman’s was the important wicket now. Henry picked up his second, clean bowling Coleman, which left the Penicuik innings in tatters. Sam then picked up his second with another catch behind, Wally making sure first time with the catch.
Kelbey was brought back to try and kill things off but some resistance was met from Aslam. He was happy to try to hook and pull Kelbey’s bouncers. This brought about a tactical change with Sam being posted at Fine Leg in place of Q. The next ball saw a top edge soar straight to Sam at fine leg and was easily taken, despite the shouts from mid on of “I would’ve swallowed that”.
Good fielding kept the pressure on the batsmen and despite a few catches being missed they never really threatened our total. Blackie replaced Sam after a good spell of just 5 overs. This proved a good move though with Blackie finding good areas early on and was rewarded with 3 wickets. A ninth wicket of 49 was the largest of the innings and took their total to some respectability. Rhino decided that spin at both ends was required to clean up the tail, which he duly did.
