Match report We arrived at Penicuik for our second game in 2 weeks with the sun shining once again. The game was to be played on the same wicket as last time, however it looked quite different. There was much less grass and the ends were almost totally bare. With the dry weather it wasn’t a surprise that the pitch was dry but it was also decorated with numerous cracks. It did look a good one to bat on but sadly Tony, the stand in skipper, lost the toss. Finbar came in to the team for his second appearance of the season to replace Ryan.

The warm up was a little less organised than usual as the kit had been left at Forthill. Fortunately Henry had remembered the football and after a rummage through the players bags 2 balls were found for a fielding drill.

Bowling wasn’t going to be easy in the warm conditions and had it not been for the breeze it would’ve been very oppressive. Dougie took the new ball with KP and both soon discovered there wouldn’t be much help for the bowlers. They raced to 30 off the first 4 overs but Kelbey got the first wicket, a shorter one that the batsmen tried to pull and miss timed to Howie at mid off. Q was brought on to try and slow things down and with Wally standing up to the stumps we started to exert some pressure.

Coleman had looked composed and timed the ball well in the previous game and that form continued. Henry replaced KP and despite bowling some good balls wasn’t able to stop the runs coming. It looked like the spinners would play an important part and Blackie was brought on early. The ball hadn’t gone off the straight in the first dozen or so overs so discipline was important. By now Q was starting to tire and had he not been coming down the hill with the breeze at his back some deliveries might not have reached Wally at the other end.

After bowling 10 straight through in an economical spell Q was replaced by Howie for his first bowl of the season. This proved to be a master stroke from Tony as, not for the first time, Howie was the partnership breaker. He picked up the vital wicket of Ramzan caught and bowled to end the 108 run partnership. This sparked a recovery for Forfs but Coleman was still going well and completed his 50. Blackie produced a beauty to dispose of Ruthven and backed by some good fielding the run out of Aslam soon followed and the breaks were applied.

Willy Morton threatened for a while with a 40 run partnership with Coleman who brought up a well made hundred from 133 balls. It was a change of ends for Kelbey as he was brought back on to get a wicket and duly obliged, Morton caught behind by Wally. Sam then picked up Coleman to a good catch from AB at deep square leg. With the important wickets gone and the cloud cover providing some assistance, KP and Samwise finished off the innings well. We conceded just 42 runs from the last 10 overs, which was a great effort by the bowlers and everyone in the field.

There was the usual superb selection of cakes and scones at tea, the strawberry flan was particularly tasty. Howie and Wally took advantage of the good batting conditions and posted a century opening stand in the twenty second over. The introduction of Willy Morton was to prove too much of a temptation. Howie was first to succumb to his flighted deliveries, with Wally following soon after. AB then hit a simple catch back to the bowler to give Morton three wickets in the over. Just as the opposition were starting to look beaten and deflated we gifted them a way back into the game and put unnecessary pressure on ourselves.

Finbar and Dougie were up to the challenge and put together a fine 72 run partnership. Both batted well and were patient in accumulating their runs but were still able to put away the boundary balls in style. Dougie also managed to score a 5 that was only narrowly cut off on the boundary from being a 7. It was a curious piece of cricket with the initial single being turned into a 3 and a near miss run out. The bowler then had a brain freeze, inexplicably throwing the several yards wide of the stumps.

The return of Ramzan accounted for Dougie after making a really important 39 runs. More drama was to follow with Tony out in the next over caught and bowled by young Morton. Then Ramzan struck twice in his next over with Finbar and Henry both bowled. From 186 for 3 we were now 198 for 7 and feeling under pressure again. Kelbey and Blackie kept their heads and were able to see us through to victory. The skipper insisted that we meet up in Nandos for the post match celebrations.
