Poloc v Forfarshire Cricket Club Forfarshire on Sat 18 Jul 2009 at 1pm
Forfarshire Cricket Club Won 10 wickets (D/L)
Match report
Heavy rain on Friday meant that the chance of a game at Forthill was slim. The weather in the west had been better so our trip to Shawholm for our clash with Poloc looked to be safe. The weather was showery all the way until it started to brighten up past Stirling. However, as we reached Glasgow there was some rain in the air and when we arrived at the ground the cover sheet was still on.
We started a light warm up after the drizzle stopped and once the cover was removed we could see some dampness in the wicket. There was a bit of grass too and with a lush outfield it didn’t look likely to be a high scoring game. We knew the pro and amateur could bat a bit after our earlier meeting at Forthill. Rhino won another toss and chose to bowl.
With Wally away on Under19 duty there was much speculation in the press about Scotland’s newest wicketkeeper making an appearance. It would have been hard for Rhino to get through his full quota of overs from behind the stumps so Tony was given the gloves instead. Gav Martin came in for his debut to replace AB who was also away. Kelbey once again produced a good opening spell and it wasn’t long before the first wicket was pouched by Tony behind the stumps. Spence departed early to a really good catch from Finbar at first slip off the bowling of Q. KP then dispatched the vital wicket of the Poloc pro and Q had the new batsmen trapped LBW. Another great start for the Forfs had them 17 for 4.
Henry came on and bowled well picking up the wicket of Sheridan to a good catch from Watty in the covers. The commando roll didn’t score him any extra points from the judges though. We were interrupted by rain for about an hour and took an early tea. Once things had dried up the game was reduced to 38 overs a side. Rhino came on and picked up 3 wickets and made scoring runs difficult. The amateur batted through to the end but wasn’t able to play many big shots. Tony took another couple of catches and with just 2 byes (not that we were counting) had a good day behind the stumps. Sam replaced Henry after he completed a good spell of 8 overs. Sam’s been doing a good job bowling at the death and he bowled a good four overs for just 16 runs to close the innings. This included one big six, which was the only ball the amateur was able to get hold of.
With just 95 needed off 38 overs after the D/L adjustment we were confident of knocking them off. Howie was born for these situations and got his head down and batted really well. His experience would have helped Finbar to battle through the difficult spells as the two of them knocked off the runs in 26 overs. Howie enjoyed playing a few shots over the top towards the end and Finbar looked more relaxed and confident as he too played a few nice shots. A generous 24 extras helped us to an easy win in the end and the maximum 10 points.
