Forfarshire Cricket Club 1st XI v Stoneywood-Dyce on Sat 22 Aug 2009 at **12 noon**
Forfarshire Cricket Club Lost 6 wickets

Match report After a horrendous month of weather we were delighted to be bathed in warm sunshine at Forthill. The outfield was very soft under foot and certainly not as quick as previous weeks. The pitch was very dry and had been used for several other games recently due to the bad weather. Tony took over as Captain for the day as Rhino was off on Scotland duty. We were also without the Philip’s brothers who were competing in the European beach cricket championships in Portugal. Finbar and Chic returned to the first team and it was the first appearance for Umi for a number of weeks. He was fresh from his stint at Bailwal’s Garden Cricket Academy in Brisbane.

We won the toss and had a bat first. It was quickly evident that there wasn’t any pace in the wicket. There were no significant partnerships put together early on with Howie, Finbar and AB all out with low scores. Wally was batting well though and after a cautious start continued his good form. Umi and Wally were ticking things over nicely and put on 50 for the fourth wicket. Wally brought up his fifty in the 30th over and then started to play more positively. Umi was eventually out for 20 just as he was starting to look to accelerate. Another good partnership with Wally and Tony took the score to 184 for 5.

A big push to the end would give us a useful total on the board. Kelbey and Wally worked the ball around well and put together another partnership. The boundaries started to come as well with Kelbey showing the way with a big six over mid-on and Wally taking his tally to 3 sixes. Wally completed an excellent hundred without which we surely would have struggled to reach 200. It was a composed innings and marked a return to the scoring form that we witnessed at the start of the season. No one was sure what a good score would be given the wicket and outfield conditions. Our total of 230 wouldn’t be easy to chase even though it was our lowest at Forthill this year.

It was another good start for the openers with only 24 runs from the first 10 overs. The early wickets didn’t come though and it took until the 12th over for Q to pick up the first one. A change of bowling at both ends saw the scoring rate steadily increase. Leask in particular was quick to seize on any short bowling. The next ten overs saw 52 runs added as the partnership developed. Blackie and Howie came into the attack and managed to restrict things for a while. There was little luck for any of the bowlers with a number of miss timed shots evading fielders. Leask benefited most and brought up his 50 in the 27th over. He struck the ball well when he chose to take a risk and first Blackie then Howie came in for some treatment as he started to accelerate.

Kelbey came back into the attack but he too couldn’t find the breakthrough. AB was given a rare bowl for the first team and was keen to make a point against a fellow Scotland player. He bowled with good pace and immediately looked threatening. Leask brought up a well made century in 108 balls and showed some good positive batting and clean hitting. AB broke the partnership in his third over but with plenty wickets remaining the batsmen continued to be positive and the runs kept coming.

They needed just 54 from the last 10 overs with 8 wickets remaining, so it was a big ask for the bowlers at this stage. There were too many four balls bowled and not enough pressure applied to the batsmen. The lack of pace in the wicket didn’t help our bowlers and once a batsman got himself in it wasn’t easy to get him out. Stoneywood eased past our total with 2 overs to spare, which more or less put to bed any hopes of winning the league.
