Montrose v Forfarshire Cricket Club 3rd XI on Tue 02 Jun 2009 at 6.15pm
Forfarshire Cricket Club Lost 61 runs

Match report Forthill XI made the trip up the East coast to the picturesque Union Park in Montrose to begin their defence of the Two Counties Cup.

Due to a combination of injury, unavailability and competition rules it was an unusual looking team that made its way North. Apart from the ageing trio of messrs Sim, Inglis and McConnachie ; it was a very youthful side to put it mildly. LJ took his first game of the season to help us out and was resplendent throughout the match in a fetching pair of white umbro shorts. The fact LJ at 22 years old was the fourth eldest Forthill player on view gives you an idea of how young the side was, the remaining places being taking by four under 17 players, two under 15's and an under 13.

Against an experienced Montrose side it was always going to be a tough job and the home team won the toss and batted first on a surprisingly clean looking wicket.

LJ and Jingles opended up and bowled well enough and a couple of wickets fell to keep us in the game, however throughout the innings the Montrose players all chanced their arm and a combination of lusty hitting and a few slices of luck saw the post a more than competitive total of 127. Credit goes to the youngsters in the shape of messrs Singh, Bedford, Cameron and McCallum who all bowled pretty well and to the even younger lads Samir, Calum and Scott who all fielded well throughout.

Against this sizeable total and with an inexperienced batting line up it was largely up to Clark and LJ at the top of the order to make a big score and when they took the score up to forty without loss in the seventh over things were on track. However when LJ played over one that kept low and the scoring started to dry up things became a bit frantic and when a mix up between Clark and Simmy saw Clark run out the writing was on the wall. Unfortunately the innings then fell apart pretty quickly against some decent home bowling and the game was ended when we were all out with several overs remaining.

Credit goes to Montrose who played well and for Forthil XI it was a case of the many good youngsters on view hopefully learning from the experience.

It was an unfortunate way to relinquish our grip on the trophy, however on the bright side we can now concentrate on the league..........

The Montrose casuals turned up as arranged to meet Mad Gav's Barmy Army - but I am told Gav's bus re-routed to the latest G8 summit in Italy for what sounded like an opportunity for some top quality continental rumble.
