Forfarshire Cricket Club 2nd XI v Stoneywood/Dyce on Sat 09 Jul 2005 at 1pm
Forfarshire Cricket Club Lost 11 runs

Match report
With Scotland's unbeaten run in the group stages of this weeks ICC Trophy ensuring qualification for the 2007 World Cup, 22 cricketers took the field at Forthill on Saturday knowing that to have any chance of being on the plane to the Caribbean the hard work and eye catching performances needed to start now. So who laid down early claims for selection?

Stoneywood batted first and got off to a flyer thanks to some very poor bowling from the tricky Pavilion End, racing to 88 for 1 after the first 15 overs. The rate slowed soon with Kean finding a fantastic line and length from the easier Nursery Road end after Barry had put a hold on things, handling the slope at the Pavilion end expertly.

The Stoneywood batting was nothing special and their one performance of note came from Matty Cohen who built a solid total for himself mixing aggression and placement in equal measure to finish with 124. Our bowlers, with a couple of notable exceptions, stuck to their task throughout in the face of some
woeful fielding and Blackie, Kean, Baz and Winker all deserved more.

Blackie was the pick finishing with figures of 9-2-34-2, but could so easily have had more in the wicket column had luck gone his way. Stoneywood finished eventually with 284 for the loss of 7 wickets, 46 of those runs coming in extras and at least 25-30 more in misfields.

Our reply had to get off to a good start, and with our ever reliable opening partnership promoted to first team duty, it was left to Butts and the captain to set the tone. As it was the stand in openers couldn't have faired any better, 15 overs into the game getting us up to 71 without loss, and still very much in the game in the face of a daunting total.

Both passed 50 before being out in equally unfortunate manners, Finbar run out for 53 after Butts was caught at mid wicket from a no ball, and having been given that life Butts himself went for 60, stumped off the keepers pads. It would have been easy to capitulate at this stage, but credit to all the batsmen who stuck in and got us up to within touching distance of a remarkable victory. As it was we finished just 11 runs short, Blackie completing an all round display with 32 not out, and Poppsy reaching a half century in finishing 52 not out, including one huge sixoverextracover@hotmail.com.

Not for the first time this season the game was lost because of our sloppiness in the field, to finish only 11 runs short having shipped around 70 runs in misfields and extras was tough to take, but we had no-one to blame but ourselves again.

Overall then, who were the ones who pressed hardest for selection?

Well, if the World Cup squad was to be selected tomorrow solely on the basis of this match, the Scottish selectors would be hard pressed to find fault with this XI.
