Arbroath v Forfarshire Cricket Club 1st XI on Sat 16 Jul 2005 at 1pm
Forfarshire Cricket Club Won 87 runs

Match report It was another warm sunny day with a moderate westerly blowing across the ground. On inspection of the wicket it was clear that there would be quite a few runs scored. It was certainly the hardest track we had seen all season and one that the batsmen would love to see more often. The outfield was quick and the boundary towards the pavilion looked around 70 yards so it was going to be a hard day in the field, a good toss to win and bat first.

After a steady start Howie and Pete found some good touch and put on 118 for the first wicket. A solid platform meant that the stroke makers to follow could play their shots. We were hopeful that Ryan would continue his form that earned him man of the match in the ICC Trophy final and when he joined Pete in the middle we knew he wouldn’t be hanging around. Some trademark 6’s punctuated a quickfire 49 that put us well on course for a good total. Even the introduction of Woody into the attack didn’t stop the runs coming.

Robert and Umi both continued their good form with scores in the twenty’s coming in good time. Wickets fell regularly in the last 10 overs which helped slow our run rate but we were very pleased to have posted our highest total of the season.

Arbroath are a strong batting side and a disciplined display in the field would be needed. Both the Arbroath openers are capable of scoring quickly, as we saw against them earlier in the season. We got off to a great start when a sharp bit of work from drummy had Ben McGill stumped and soon after Tredy Gibbons was bowled. I bowled my 10 overs straight through and finished my best spell of the summer with 4 vital wickets. Woody and Jon Salmond were still at the crease and we knew they could still take the total close.

Woody has been in great touch this year and looked dangerous until he inexplicably hit a return catch to Robert Cannon and departed for 51. The ball didn’t deserve a wicket never mind the vital one that all but finished off the Arbroath reply. Howie was struggling a bit with his back and only managed a couple of overs. Aman once again came on and bowled a very tidy spell and was unlucky to go for a few runs off the edge of the bat. Fodder and Watty bowled well and picked up 2 wickets each.

A great all-round team performance and another excellent display in the field earned us a memorable victory over our local rivals. The younger lads are really starting to make a mark and have certainly improved the fielding standards.
