Match report
Match report from Dalts....
It was a magnificent sunny afternoon as we turned up at Forthill for the match. After a brief warm up it was left to Finbar to win the toss and allow for a bit of sunbathing (especially LJ with his sparkly sun cream) and batting. Unfortunately this proved beyond our captain so we were sent out to field.
It all started quite well with LJ bowling with good pace and accuracy and Asif getting good movement off the pitch. LJ was unlucky not to pick up a wicket when Baz was unable to take a very sharp chance at point (a theme that unfortunately was to continue!). Cameron and Baz were the first change bowlers and they continued to put pressure on. However by now the Strathy openers were well set and started to pick up some runs from any misplaced deliveries on what was a very flat batting track. The bowlers were not helped by some sloppy fielding that managed to turn 1’s into 2’s and 2’s to 3’s! Camy was unlucky not to pick up a wicket as the ball fell just short of Pottsy on the boundary.
Blackie was brought on for Baz and quickly found the track to be turning. However with the batsman now attacking most deliveries it more often than not turned all the way to the boundary! As their openers progressed ominously towards a big total Pottsy had the chance at mid-off to break the partnership – however whether it was the sun or some other excuse that comes to mind he was unable to take the chance, injuring his finger in the process (luckily after the X-ray examination the only lasting damage from this incident was to his pride!).
At drinks there was talk of us having to chase 450 if our luck didn’t change – but thankfully a breakthrough did eventually come with Asif taking the catch off Camy. With the breakthrough came renewed hope, but unfortunately the bowling continued in much the same way – a lot of effort without much to show! After a long 45 overs we were finally put out of our misery and allowed to go for tea, knowing that a harder task was still to come.
Camy opened with Asif and provided us with some early entertainment with an immaculate straight drive for 4 off the first ball. Unfortunately the bubble was quickly burst when Asif was caught in the 2nd over trying to go over the top. The wicket brought myself (Dalts) to the crease, and Camy and I were able to get a few runs that started making the total look not quite so daunting on what was still a very good batting track. However after we raced to 57 off 5 overs Camy was sent back by Dick after being given out LBW (it was hitting all 3!). He later suggested that Dick should have showed more club spirit!!
The runs continued to flow out in the middle until the opposition captain decided to bring on his spinners, who quickly got the ball turning and made scoring much more difficult. This proved to be a masterstroke as wickets quickly fell and suggested an embarrassingly low total was on the cards. Luckily though Baz and LJ showed good patience and application and put on 50 for the 6th wicket partnership. Baz fell for 35, leaving LJ with the tail. He responded well and managed some lusty blows over the top and sweeps that Ryan would’ve been proud of on his way to collecting a well deserved top score of 50. However there was the air of inevitability at that stage, and we were finally dismissed for 199 after Pottsy (who had decided to bat despite injury) was caught.
All in all not the best day of cricket, but at least we salvaged a bit of pride in our batting before the barbeque with the victorious first team.
