Forfarshire Cricket Club Won 53 runs
Match report
The south district’s inability to fulfil their u16 fixture against Central at Largo saw the match venue changed back to Largo at the last minute, to avoid the match day arrangements going to waste.
Leaving Forthill at 1pm, it was assumed the car drivers all knew where Largo was, and that we should arrive just in time for a 2pm start. So after winning the toss and electing to bat, Simmy became a little concerned that Colin’s car, with Martin and Dean on board, hadn’t yet arrived. After a quick call, the missing car was located in Drum (somewhere near Dollar) after Martin’s navigating took Col through Fife and across the M90.
Largo’s ground is set high above the River Forth, so on a good day such as Sunday, the backdrop has to be one of the best in the country. Gav and Dave opened the batting on a good batting wicket and both were going along nicely until a direct hit from the boundary saw Gav run out for 16. Kean was next to the crease and was unlucky to drag one back onto his stumps on a day he had hoped to demonstrate his improved batting seen on a few occasions so far this season. Dave retired on 50 after about 20 overs to give the middle order a chance. Simmy jnr batting slowly at first but gathered momentum later in his innings to hit several well timed boundaries – and retired on 50, his first ever half century.
Dean’s late arrival at the ground was soon put behind him as he hit an entertaining 50 – his first half century too, and scored at well over a run a ball with a number of hard hit boundaries including lofting one of Largo’s quicker bowlers into the pavilion for 6. Brief stays at the crease from Ally, Ian and Colin saw Andy come in at number 10 to hit a couple of fours as Forthill reached 248 in just 40 overs.
Tea was of the highest standard, with the largest selection of cakes ever seen at a 3rd team game.
In true friendly spirit, bowlers were limited to 5 overs each, so Forthill had to dig deep into their array of bowling talent to get through the overs. Colin took the new-ish ball, but finished wicketless, his opening partner had more luck, Gav beating the bat early in his spell and removed the Largo openers off bail.
Next up was Martin who bowled a miserly spell but also finished wicketless, while at the River end, Andy picked up a couple, one requiring a great dive to take a return catch.
The next bowling “pair” was Potts and Sim, with the first wicket going to Simmy from his 5th delivery. Poppsie took a bit longer to find his line and length, and after two overs of a mixture of pace, half trackers, swing, full tosses and ones that nipped back off the seam, was in danger of being taken off after 2 overs. However the skipper’s patience was rewarded as it all came together in over number three - and two of Largo’s batsmen were dismissed, one bowled, one LBW.
Ally and Dean rounded off the day with 2 good spells, Ally picking up 1 for 23 including 1 maiden in his 5 overs, while Deano just failed to pick up the last wicket to wrap up the game.
All in all, a good day out at an interesting ground with the game played in the best of spirits by both teams.
