Forfarshire Cricket Club 1st XI v Stenhousemuir on Sat 06 Aug 2005 at 1pm
Forfarshire Cricket Club Won 5 wickets
Match report
We knew if we put in the sort of performance we were capable of then victory would be secured over the league leaders. We lost the toss again and were asked to field first. The wicket was a bit softer than normal and further over to the school than normal. This meant that there was a slope on the wicket and the boundary was slightly shorter at one side. The pro, Jon Beukes, was the main threat and he was very watchful at the start. There was a bit of movement and Ryan beat the outside edge on countless occasions, the slope also making it a bit more difficult for the batsmen. The overseas amateur holed out to mid-on and then there was a very sharp chance went down in the gully. Beukes could have been out 2 or 3 times before he eventually hit one in the air through the covers and Rob Cannon took a good diving catch. A couple of quick wickets got us back on top and it was time for Umair the run out bowler. A good bit of fielding by Aman at Mid-off and a good throw to Drummy behind the stumps saw an easy run out. Umair bowled really well and picked up the other vital wicket of Gardener.
We had a couple of brief showers that forced us off the ground for a while but things soon got under way. Steny were under a bit of pressure now and we felt we could bowl them out. Both of the new batsmen offered chances, the first a difficult one at backward point that Rob managed to get both hands to, he was disappointed not to have clung on. The other was a very simple catch at square leg that Sam some how contrived to drop. In the space of a couple of overs our 2 best fielders had dropped catches. Had we clung on to one of these then I’m sure we could have bowled them out quite cheaply. We kept things pretty tight and the fielding was good so we couldn’t complain too much about restricting them to 176.
Pete and howie opened up as normal but it wasn’t long until Pete was back in the pavilion, after being bowled by a ball that deflected off his pads and rolled back onto the stumps. As soon as Ryan came to the crease he made his intentions clear, using his feet to hit both openers back over their heads for 4 and one majestic 6 over long-off. His fifty came up in quick time with the score on about 78. The introduction of Jon Beukes saw the run rate slow a bit. Once Howie was out for a very Patient 22, Rob C followed quickly LBW after an attempted sweep. It appeared from every angle on the ground, except the umpires, that it was a dubious one and Rob confirmed that it hit his glove and didn’t make it to his pads. When bowling I’m all too often frustrated by “the benefit of the doubt” but it didn’t seem to apply in this case! Umair fell soon after caught behind and the pressure was now on with nearly a hundred still required. Tony joined Ryan at the crease and they put on about 70 before Tony was run out. An important innings from the captain and he played some good shots through the covers as well as a few handy edges. Ryan completed his century not long after, continuing to play his shots and he and Chic saw us home.
A win which highlighted the significance of the last 2 defeats we had suffered. If 2 of the close defeats had gone our way we could have been top of the league. Ryan had made good scores in 2 of our previous close defeats and he certainly deserved to be on the wining side this time. Probably the best innings I’ve seen him play for Forfarshire, his 111 coming in just 118 balls and when he’s in this sort of form with bat and ball he’s Scotland’s Freddy Flintoff.
