Match report
It was another splendid sunny Saturday afternoon as we travelled to the picturesque ground at Falkland. The wicket was a bit soft on the top and had quite a bit of grass, so it didn’t look like there would be a great deal of pace. We continued our bad tossing form and were asked to bat first. Drummy got dug in from the word go and played well milking a few singles and hitting the odd four. Howie looked to be struggling to time the ball or find any gaps in the field when he thrashed at one in frustration and was caught for nought. Ryan came to the crease and looked to dominate early but only managed to hole out to mid-off. Robbie C batted beautifully and timed the ball sweetly to the boundary on several occasions. Just as we were applying some pressure he played a half-hearted front foot drive that was caught at cover. As far as golden opportunities to make a big score go this was definitely one wasted for Rob, the hair in the eye excuse wasn't washing after his mid-week trip to the barber.
Tony looked determined and thankfully came to the party to score his second fifty in the league this year. He and drummy batted well together and with the aid of some loose bowling gradually increased the run rate. Pete began to play a few shots and started racking up the boundaries as he made his way to his first century for the Forfs. He had been close a few times previously and certainly deserved the congratulations of the rest of the team. Shot of the day goes to LJ when he came down the track and hit the Falkland skipper over extra cover for a glorious boundary. It was a joy to watch from the non-strikers end and showed some batting potential that we don’t see enough of from him.
In reply we started poorly with too many four-balls and Rob managed to let the pro slip through his fingers at square leg in the first over. The other opener departed early caught behind, the OA came to the crease and played a few good shots. LJ came on and picked up his wicket with a wide half-volley. Rhino came on and bowled well but didn’t pick any wickets up. The dangerous Dave Gray hit a few boundaries before he chased one outside off to be caught behind by Drummy. Howie came on and turned the screw picking up 3 wickets. Rob C also joined the attack and picked up the vital wicket of the pro James Carson. He had somehow made his way to 64 with some miss-timed and uncontrolled pull shots and drives and was lucky not to be caught on a couple of occasions. On the occasion that he was caught by Ryan at mid-wicket neither umpire was able to make a decision if the ball had carried. The incident happened directly between both of them and for the rest of us there wasn’t much doubt. Ryan’s word wasn’t good enough for the umpires or the batsmen and he was given not out. One of a few poor pieces of umpiring that we were victim to but fortunately they only cost us drinking time.
Bobby finished with 4 wickets as the tail “dug in” for some reason and only entertained us with the odd boundary. We were forced to play to the 48th over, the game having been over for about 20 of those. Never the less a satisfying victory that guarantees us a top five finish and a place in Europe.
