Forfarshire Cricket Club Forthill v Huntly on Sat 20 Aug 2005 at 1pm
Forfarshire Cricket Club Lost 4 wicket
Match report
After rain brought disappointment to so many earlier in the week, most of the 4500 spectators who had braved the elements at the Grange opted to stay away from Forthill on Saturday, presumably fearful of a 2nd washout in 3 days. As it was the plucky few who had made the trip to Broughty Ferry were treated with a day of glorious sunshine and an entertaining game of cricket which swung both ways throughout the day in a way which Freddie and Jones the Bowl would have been proud of.
Huntly stepped off their fun bus just after quarter to one with only 9 men and having won the toss Miersy opted to take advantage of the lack of fielders and we had a bat. The merits of this looked pretty dubious very quickly as our Barbados bound president felt Geoff Perera had swung the ball back in enough to leave the Pro plumb in front after shouldering arms for just 2 runs. More trouble followed when Asif "Hoffy" Nassir tickled one to the keeper leaving us 8-2 after not very many overs.
Blackie and Poppsy began the fightback though, with Blackie playing the anchor role, racing to 4 from just 7 overs before being caught trying to force the pace.
This brought Craig to the crease at number 5 and with Ian already looking set and punishing the wide ball things were beginning to look a bit more promising. Sure enough Craig and Ian put on a stand of over 100, both playing some great shots, Ian particularly enjoying any width and smashing any number of drives through cover for 4. Having not looked in any trouble throughout his innings he eventually went LBW for 70, and the Huntly players seemed pleased to see young Gav Martin strolling purposefully out to join Craig in the middle.
Their joy was short lived, however, as the youngsters playing with great confidence, Craig finishing with 34 and Gav with 25. Wickets began to fall more regularly now as we pushed hard to pass 200, Elliot the pick of rest, finishing with 25 thanks to some free swinging and good timing. Having been struggling at 8-2 it was a great effort to pass 200, credit going to Poppsy and the kids who scored 154 runs between the 4 of them.
With what looked on paper to be a team full of bowling option we were pretty confident of rolling a 9 man team, and with Winker and Craig combining brilliantly to dismiss Ali first ball of the game we were well on top. The opening bowlers were fantastic with Winkers pace and aggression bringing him 3 wickets and Asif's tight lines building pressure at the other end. The first change bowlers let the side down and let Huntly get right back into things with some loose deliveries, Daddy in particular struggling (up hill and into a heavy breeze) to find any rhythm conceding 40 from 5 overs, most of those in boundaries. Blackie was bit unlucky to come up against a batsman who was throwing the bat at everything, and unfortunately connecting with everything. On another day he could easily have had him out 2 or 3 times.
Once Rusty's golden arm sent Slugger back to the hutch, courtesy of a stunning catch on the boundary from Elliot which lit up the ground, we were on top again with 3 wickets required and stil 50 runs to get. As it was they had edged just far enough ahead off the run rate and despite our best attempts they sneaked past our 212 with 3 overs to spare.
