Forfarshire Cricket Club Won 18 runs
Match report
On the two previous occasions that I had a game away to Stoneywood they had been rained off without us travelling. So I had never been to the ground before and if the weather forecast was to be believed then I might never have had the pleasure. The weather was cold and damp but sadly not damp enough to stop us travelling. As we arrived at the end of the runway the skies looked ominous and it was likely we wouldn’t get the game finished. Tony managed to win a toss at last and we had a bat first, just incase the weather closed in.
Both openers started well but Howie was the one picking up the boundaries. There were a few uncharacteristic attacking shots and he timed the ball very well. We had a couple of brief showers throughout our innings but they didn’t force us off the field and as the ball got a bit wet bowling became more difficult. We had a very healthy scoring rate in the first 20 overs and it was only slowed when we lost a couple of wickets. The Stoneywood player’s hangovers were becoming more visible as our skipper went out to bat. Howie and he combined well to put on an important partnership before he was out 5 runs short of what would have been a deserved half-century. Howie completed his century in good time and I think most would agree his best knock of the summer.
We lost a few quick wickets and once again I was forced to strap on the pads and make an appearance. After getting off the mark first ball I was eyeing the short straight boundary and fancied my chances of depositing one over the wall for my second six of the season. Unfortunately I ran out of talent halfway through the shot and was lucky not to be cleaned up. Aman insisting afterwards that the ball had infact clipped the off-stump, but I’m not sure as I was looking somewhere towards Aberdeen at the time.
The weather had brightened a bit during tea and it looked as though the game would have a result. It was a familiar start in the field, the ball beating the bat and miss-timed shots dropping over fielders heads, edges rushing between keeper and slip for four pretty much sums up my season. Just for good measure add a pernickety umpire with failing eye sight and a pound of salt to the wound, a wicket from a no-ball - it was some delivery too!
So lets move swiftly on to the important part of the innings. Howie has started his warm up and finished it quicker than a Flintoff 6 parts the crowd. The batsmen’s eyes are lighting up but only managing to hit it straight into the hands of mid-wicket. To cap off a brilliant all-round performance, Howie captures another 4 wickets in the league to take his tally to 36. His 5 wicket haul was denied by a catch in the deep falling just short of a diving Umi. This extraordinary achievement is endorsed by the following records –
1. It was highest individual wickets taken in the North Division in 2005.
2. The second highest in the whole of the SNCL in 2005. Bettered only by Clydesdale pro Yasir Arafat.
3. This is the single highest tally of wickets in a season in the History of the SNCL by a Forfarshire bowler.
The game was almost won by the time Howie had finished his spell but the Stoneywood pro was still at the crease and showed that he can hit the ball very hard. He put us under some pressure by taking advantage of the short boundaries and scoring quite quickly. I decided as it was the last game of the season that we shouldn’t win too easily and dropped a catch at long-off, it was made easier by the frozen water particles on the ball when it eventually came down. Wickets fell at the other end and time eventually ran out for him as we secured a well deserved victory by 18 runs.
Nobody will argue that Howie had an exceptional all-round season and I can’t work out how he has managed to miss out on a career as an all-rounder. He has also achieved the rare honour of winning the club batting and bowling prize.
