Match report It was a pleasant surprise to arrive at Doo’cot Park in Perth to find that the heavy rain of the previous night had mostly missed the ground and that the game would go ahead.

The wicket was slightly soft, so on winning the toss Simmy had no hesitation in asking Northern to bat first. Forthill’s opening attack took the form of Kean and Dean, both fired up for the occasion as a result of a £5 bet between them on who would take most wickets.

Kean bowled a great line and length from ball 1, repeatedly passing outside edge but with no reward, while Dean took a bit longer to settle, but picked up a wicket in his 3rd over. Two wickets for Kean in consecutive overs, and with the skipper considering a bowling change, the fiver looked to be heading to Kean, but Dean got one to move a bit off the pitch which caught the outside edge and Elliot took a low catch in the slips to make it 2-2. So it came down to economy to decide where the money went – Kean bowling his 10 overs for just 17 runs to take his mate’s cash.

Andy replaced Dean and collected 2 in two balls in his 5th over but the hat-trick ball was well wide of off stump. Elliot was getting significant turn and bounce, and got the big wicket of opener Pedgrift for 51, caught at first slip by Dave. The in-coming bat Gourlay looked to hit Elliot over the top immediately and after two consecutive deliveries fell just short of the cow corner boundary, an alternative plan was suggested by Clark. Elliot was left to consider whether to keep flighting most deliveries ball or bowl a few “darts.” The choice was a dart on off stump which beat the batsman and the ball flew off an edge, Simmy taking the catch.

Forthill XI had 114 to get on a slow wicket, so there was an air of caution amongst the confidence at tea. But there was no need to worry as a well paced innings of 43 from Gav put the team well on track for a comfortable win, with Clark hitting 8 four’s and a six in his knock of 44 not out which saw fielders taking evasive action as the ball whistled past them.
