Match report
It was another very fine day for our journey to Linlithgow. An unusually prompt departure from Forthill meant there was plenty time to visit the local bakers for some healthy pre-match pies. With some Kelly Clarkson on the car stereo and the sun shining brightly the mood was good as we arrived at Boghall. The wicket looked good and we won the toss and batted first with the usual pair of Howie and Pete opening the innings. Thanks to some wayward bowling and a few extras the scoring rate was pleasingly brisk. Just as a solid opening partnership was starting to develop Pete was out LBW. Rob Cannon started well, hitting some nice shots, but choosing the aerial route looked perilous and he would have departed early had a simple chance not been dropped at square leg. It wasn’t long before a similar shot saw him gift another chance to mid-wicket and this time he wasn’t so fortunate. This brought Cam to the crease and he and Howie began to build a good platform. At the halfway stage we were well placed to push for a score of 220 to 230 and with the outfield quite slow this would have been a challenging total.
When Cam was given out LBW to a ball that looked and sounded like he had edge onto his pads (he later confirmed this) things began to take a turn for the worse. Umair departed shortly after as the third LB of the innings. Chik came in and was playing quite nicely before a good Yorker counted for his demise. When Howie made a bad choice of shot and was bowled our position wasn’t looking quite as good with 6 wickets down. The team photographer for the day was Neil Martin and he had been busy working on some good shots but now had to try and play a few good shots. He and Aman came together and played well nudging the singles around. AB didn’t capitalise on his opportunity to make a good score and was another to be clean bowled. Probably thinking too much about how many cakes he could eat and still be able to bowl. Richie and Neily then put together a very important partnership picking the gaps well and running hard between the wickets. This final push combined with a generous portion of extras accounted for our very competitive final total.
We had 2 very good, close games against West Lothian last year and we knew they had plenty of depth in their batting so it wasn't going to be easy. After being warned by the umpire that my front foot was close to the front line I moved my mark back six inches. This proved about 2 inches short of being the good start we needed as the umpires cry of no ball was shortly followed by the off stump being disturbed. I made up for it next ball with a plum LBW that gave us the early boost we needed. Richie bowled well and was unlucky not to pickup any wickets as Cameron managed to spill a couple of good chances in the covers. Howie took a good catch at slip and the pro miss-timed one to the hands of mid-wicket giving me the first blood on the pro counter for the season. LJ didn’t quite get his line and length but picked up another important wicket. We knew they still had enough batting to take the game close and Umair came on at an important stage. The switch to bowling off-spin could prove to be the making of Umi, as an excellent spell of bowling saw him pick up 3 wickets and really put us in control. Cameron also bowled well using good variation and with the pressure mounting the batsmen offered chances that I’m glad to say were all taken. The winning margin was very comfortable in the end and a good all round team performance gave us the perfect start to the season.
