Match report
The Forfarshire flag flew at half mast as we all arrived at the club. Former players and friends of Alistair Murray gathered to join the players from both sides to pay respect in a minute’s silence. A player, coach and valued supporter of the club for many years will be sadly missed.
We lost the toss and fielded first. With a sunny start to the afternoon and the pitch looking quite good we knew it would be hard work. Watty returned from Scotland duty, Sam from hockey duty and Tony from a round Britain run, to replace the outgoing students that had to study all day Saturday. Rhino and I opened the bowling and the third over brought the perfect start, a double-wicket maiden. The opener padding up to one that flattened off-stump and former New Zealand opening batsmen Matt Horne edging behind. The other opener was playing his shots from ball one and played and missed a few times. He was quick to pounce on anything loose and when Sam came into the attack there was no margin for error as several balls disappeared to the boundary.
AB replaced Sam and steadied things with a good spell. When the third wicket fell with the score on 32 the pressure was on the batsmen. Wickets fell to AB and Howie but the run rate was still healthy. A bonus run out saw the opposition six down with only 86 runs on the board. Bruce Patterson batted well and his fifty came up in good time despite turning down a few quick singles. Fodder and Cam came into the attack but the scoreboard kept ticking over. Patterson completed a well made century and only one further wicket fell before the end of the innings. A few errors in the field, lack of form in the bowling and some extras contributed to them scoring more than they probably should have.
After tea we started cautiously, thanks to one of the openers bowling a large number of wides our score was ticking over. Pete eventually managed to reach one but could only edge it behind. The other opener bowled very slowly and managed to tie us down. His only wicket being the important one of Rhino, who claims it was a ‘jaffa’. There wasn’t much excitement in the first 30 or so overs, other than a steady tumble of wickets. Not being able to watch I decided to help with preparations for the annual Cheese and Wine that evening. I found reward with a few stolen savouries from the waiting trays of gastronomic delights that was the buffet.
There were few partnerships of note, most of the batsmen getting a start but not managing to get much beyond twenty. That was with one notable exception. Chik having shown some good early season form played an outstanding innings. A steady start saw him gradually increase the scoring and managed to keep up with a run rate that had reached nearly 10 an over. Assisted by the lower order, partnerships were finally put together with some very quick running between the wickets, good shot selection and placement. LJ provided good foil with some nice shots, further evidence of his batting potential. The stiffness in my legs on Monday morning was a lasting reminder of the amount of running between the wickets that took place. When I joined Chiquo at the crease he was already showing signs of the hard work, with his whole head looking like a ripe tomato. After a couple of lucky escapes I was finally run out, my legs giving up and not managing to turn for the second any quicker than the QE2. Pottsy managing to catch the full indignity of my despairing dive on camera . The bonus was that this brought Sam to the crease, who is faster between the wickets than Einstein himself could predict.
The final calculation was 16 from the last over. To have got this close was an achievement in itself. A few well scampered ‘braces’ kept us in the hunt and Chik on strike. One massive blow over the Long-on boundary towards the pavilion brought the total within reach. The bowler held his nerve and unfortunately the rope could not be found off the last ball of the over. An agonising 2 runs short in 100 overs of cricket is a slim margin of defeat but none the less frustrating.
