Match report
The unsettled weather continued into the weekend and as usual the forecasts were all wrong. The heavy rain of the previous evening had stopped early enough for the ground to dry out a bit. The pitch looked quite good apart from the slightly damp area in the middle where water had got under the covers earlier in the week. We lost the toss and were asked to field first. A slightly surprising decision in my opinion but the absence of the opposition Captain, who hadn’t arrived yet, probably explained it.
We started on time and not long after the four stray members of the opposition appeared. There was plenty of assistance for the bowlers in the damp conditions and it wasn’t long before a few edges were found. Rather frustratingly none of the early luck was going our way. It soon became obvious that the Dunfermline batsmen hadn’t been coached over the winter and shot selection involved a type of bingo system. Depending what number was pulled out of the hat would determine which shot to play and the choice was simply block or swing. Richie picked up one of the openers and then a good bit of fielding by him produced a run out.
The other opener had swatted across the line to twenty odd when the first chance to go to hand was dropped. There was no change in luck as further edges flew threw a vacant third slip and just over the head of point, mid-on and a couple over the slips. The strange thing was the vast majority of these were off my bowling. Needless to say a few wads of turf were kicked and expletives heard as my frustration boiled over. Eventually a leading edge carried to mid-off and the third wicket fell much to my relief. Ryan replaced Richie and also found some movement. He picked up a couple of wickets and a good catch by Trevor saw the dangerous Waqas last only one ball. This was also Ryan’s first victim on the pro-counter for the season. After my misery was over, Umair came on and tied things down, he too didn’t get the luck he deserved.
Clearly the bingo batting was to be employed by almost all of the Dunfermline side with very little thought going into their innings. We had a good opportunity to bowl them out and Richie came back on and continued where he left off, picking up another wicket. Watson returned to clean up the tail and claimed his sixth wicket and that of the Dunfermline youth policy with a sharp catch by Umair at silly mid-on (good photo of this in the gallery).
Our innings started before tea but was cut short by the first prolonged shower. Not surprisingly the opposition weren’t keen to start again after tea but eventually we did. A steady start was interrupted when a few wickets fell in an attempt to hurry things along before more rain arrived. This proved futile as the weather closed in once again. I think we were ahead on the D/L method although it’s not easy to work these things out. It was very disappointing to be denied by the weather and not collect the 25 points we deserved. It was a good performance in the field, especially by Ryan returning outstanding figures. Some mathematicians claim that Don Bradman is a statistical freak well I think the same goes for my bowling figures.
