Match report
The long trek to Prestwick was rewarded with some warm weather and sunshine. The high street in Prestwick was very busy and we had to queue in traffic for a while. The crowds had obviously decided to get to the ground early to get a good seat. This gave us time to scour the shops for a good place to find some nourishment. When the ‘Greggs’ the bakers sign was spotted there was much rejoicing. After finally finding a parking spot and dragging the kit 3 miles to the club house the sausage rolls were devoured post haste. AB finished his four course spread and the Beast cracked open the Ambrosia creamed rice and pear halves, it was time to get warmed up.
Drummy won the toss and he decided we should bowl first on what looked a decent wicket, with a hint of green on top. This proved a good decision as wickets fell early and we had them four down for about twenty runs after fourteen or so overs, great start. The pro then started to rebuild things and a good fifth wicket partnership brought them back into the game. Once again we weren’t able to maintain the early pressure and gifted too many runs on what was a fairly easy paced wicket. The fielding on the whole was improved from previous weeks. The outfield was quite slow in some areas and there wasn’t full value for all the shots. So their total would have been worth a good few more at Forthill.
Our reply started well with Howie and Watty opening the innings. Both have been in good form this year. Although Ryan hasn’t had many runs at club level, we were hoping to see some of the entertainment that he had provided for Scotland. A half-century opening stand gave us a good start in pursuit of a below par total. They both timed the ball well and weren’t in any difficulty when Watty played a big shot at a ball on the stumps, and missed. Then Cameron followed him back to the pavilion after being trapped LBW first ball, things weren’t looking so peachy. The change of bowling worked well for Prestwick with the wickets falling and runs were harder to find. Rob was playing cautiously and gradually picking up a few runs. His straight six back over the bowlers head was a splendid sight. A change of bowling once again paid off with Howie departing caught behind and then Umair following him in a similar manner not long after. This started the middle order collapse and suddenly we found ourselves at 107-7.
This brought Pete and Chik together with plenty of work to be done to get close to our target. The depth in batting meant that Pete had held himself back until number 9 and this certainly worked out well. He and Chik batted sensibly to rebuild the innings picking up the one’s and two’s to keep the score ticking over. The run rate didn’t ever get far from us but Chik was out bowled with 36 still needed to win. AB batted well and drummy started to up the tempo. A few wides helped us along and a couple of good overs brought us within touching distance. Prestwick changed the bowling again and this saw the downfall of Pete, out LBW. A valiant effort from the skipper and a pitty he wasn’t there at the end but we had done exceptionally well to get this close. With five runs required and an over and five balls it was a tight equation given the nine wickets down. AB was looking confident when I hobbled out to bat with Bobby as my runner, my knee having swollen up after taking a knock in the field. Fortunately I was able to get off the mark second ball and AB pushed another single, end of the over and we needed 3 off the last with AB on strike. A chance for him to find the glory and finish it with one hit, fortunately he kept his head and found a quick single. Batting with a runner can be tricky and there was a close call when AB was a little too eager to get back on strike. After unsuccessfully trying to hit the pro back over his head I decided a deft little sweep was called for. Maybe a little risky but I was confident of finding the 2 winning runs we needed and a moment of batting glory. The ball was in the perfect place for it and I thought I had found the gap between keeper and short fine leg. An excellent diving stop meant we could only scramble a single leaving the scores tied. I retreated to square leg to watch the final ball but sadly it wasn’t to be. AB was bowled leg-stump and the game was tied.
