Forfarshire Cricket Club 1st XI v Stirling County on Sat 24 Jun 2006 at 1pm
Forfarshire Cricket Club Won 115 runs

Match report The cloud cover of earlier in the morning cleared to warm sunshine making a perfect day to bat first. The opposition obliged and put us in after winning the toss. But not before we had a trial run of the new warm up game that Ryan had learned. I’m not sure what it’s called but it involves a conglomeration of football and touch rugby and should probably be called, ‘How to knacker everyone before the game’. I think Stirling were worried by the couple of green areas on the wicket left from water running underneath the covers earlier in the week. Howie and Rhino’s magnificent form continued as we piled on 186 for the first wicket and put to rest any doubts about the wicket.

The bowling was pretty ordinary with the overseas amateur coming in for some stick in particular, never a good idea to bowl long-hops to either of this pair. The only scares were two run out chances that came within the space of two overs. Ryan would have been the victim of both had the fielder hit the wickets. Both batsmen brought up their fifties in good time and we even witnessed the rare sight of Howie out scoring Rhino. Howie was out caught fourteen runs short of a deserved century and Rhino continued on course for his second century of the season. The decision to keep the batting order the same paid off as Cam arrived at the crease and instantly found the boundary. His well compiled 40 coming in just 30 balls.

Fodder was next in and he continued the good work with some of the elegant stroke play we’ve come to expect. He managed to get passed the dreaded twenties this week. The despairing dive wasn’t enough to save Cam as he was once again run out. Umair and Chic both ran well between the wickets and kept up the healthy scoring rate. The score passed three hundred and there was a quick sweepy on the final total. Chic was out caught and the Beast went in for the last couple of overs and was also quick to find the rope.

One of the highest first team totals for many years was setup by the superb opening partnership. We took full advantage of the poor bowling and fielding from Stirling and kept pressure on them the entire innings.

Wickets in the first two overs gave us a great start but meant an early entrance for Sajid Ali. Most of us had previously witnessed his ability to make big runs so it was important to bowl well at him. With a daunting run rate of almost seven an over all we had to do was field well and bowl with discipline. AB picked up his second wicket caught behind and really put them on the back foot. Sajid’s fifty came up in the sixteenth over but they still couldn’t keep up with the run rate. Rhino was bowling well and finding a bit of movement.

The spinners were introduced to the attack and we were expecting Saj to start taking a few risks, but he looked more interested in making sure he got his hundred. Another very tidy spell from Blackie saw him pick up a wicket with the last ball of his spell. Umi also bowled well and also picked up a wicket.

Beast was the fielder of the day, he was leaping round like a lion cub in the covers and making some outstanding one handed diving stops. The fielding was excellent all innings and we held our catches well. That was until the thirtyfifth over when Saj miss timed a drive off the bowling of Umi straight to cover. Cam wasn’t able to hang onto a fairly simple chance (at least it wasn't off my bowling). Sajid’s hundred came in the forty second over and the second of the fifty runs taking twenty six overs. Needing over eleven runs an over in the last ten overs it was a strange tactic that had effectively handed us the game.

Fodder came into the bowling attack and decided that a waste high full toss was the best way to get rid of Sajid, Rhino taking a very good catch at deep square-leg - and YES he did tell me he was going to bowl a full toss before he did it. This was also Bob's first notch on the pro-counter for the season. He then polished off the few more lower-order batsmen to finish with three wickets.

It was a resounding victory and superb team effort and a most enjoyable twenty five points.
