Match report It was another warm day as we made the short trip from Ayr to Renfrew. Having spent the previous night in the quaint and quiet hamlet of Coylton where several of the Womens Scottish Bowls champions were also staying. Some of us managed to wake them up in the small hours of the morning complaining about how skint they were.

Nobody was sure how to get to the ground and after a few phone calls and stops to ask directions the convoy from Ayr arrived at the ground. The advance party that travelled from Dundee were still unaccounted for as they had made a pit stop at Burger King.

Everything around the ground was shiny and brand new including the pitch that had been played on for the first time the previous day. It had apparently played OK apart from a couple keeping low. It didn’t look particularly great and when Drum won the 6th (yes sixth) toss in a row we decided to bowl first.

The scorebox and sight screens were wheeled out of Hanger 18 and the heavy protective cages were locked into position over the windows. People started to move there cars to the far side of the car park and we were advised to do likewise pending a likely air assault.

We got off to a good start, a loose shot gifting a catch to Bobby at Square leg and then a rather ambitious drive presenting Umair with a high catch at cover. There was a bit of assistance from the wicket and we bowled better then we had the previous day. The pro had looked a good player earlier in the season and was quite patient to start with. When Rhino gifted him a half-volley he was quick to use as much bat speed as possible to smash it through extra cover.

Renfrew then put together a partnership that looked dangerous. The introduction of Umi put an end to it in fine style. A sharp turning delivery that pitched around the edge of the cut portion, beat the shot and hit the stumps. There was plenty in it for the spinners and Umi took full advantage picking up four wickets and the important one of the pro. Taking his tally to 3 on the pro-counter.

We were lucky to find the ball when it was pulled away for four and with one bounce flew underneath the netting that was protecting the houses. There were 16 people looking through the long grass and nettles before it was found. We did eventually lose the ball when Blackie was deposited onto the roof of the pavilion. He was replaced by Howie who started well but the block or smash mentality soon returned. The pavilion was peppered by several further hits and we realised why we had been advised to move our cars. It was a short straight boundary and there was a stiff breeze helping it on its way.

We missed several half-chances in the space of a few overs, at least three catches and a stumping, none of them easy though. This could have brought a quick end to the innings but the Renfrew keeper was enjoying himself. Blackie came back on at the other end and found similar success to Umair. He likes a tail-ender too.

The Garden and Watson opening partnership is now one to rival Hayden and Langer for success. A 65 run opening partnership was exactly what we needed in pursuit of a tricky total. Watty was back firing on all cylinders and hooked a couple of sixes into the net. When Howie was out caught behind Cannon came in and was eager to make up for his previous days disappointment. Unfortunately Rhino had other ideas and sold him down the river. Umair was next in the revised batting line up and continued his good form. Watty was out stumped in ugly fashion trying to match the Renfrew batsmen’s pavilion peppering. Drummy played an effective innings, if a little untidy by his own admission, and put on about 70 with Umair to all but seal the victory before he was caught.

This gave Beast the opportunity to go out and score the winning runs. When the bowler gifted him a low full toss, that would have been given the full treatment in the nets, he only managed to pap it back to him. Fortunately for Beast the bowler was as shocked at the shot as the rest of us and dropped it, allowing Umi to hit the winning runs.

Another fine all-round display from Umi, as he increased his stock once again and deservedly took the man of the match award. A hard earned 25 points in the end but a good finish to the weekend.
