Dunfermline v Forfarshire Cricket Club 1st XI on Sat 22 Jul 2006 at 1pm
Forfarshire Cricket Club Lost 5 wickets

Match report The thundery look to the day lifted not long after arriving at Mckane Park as the sun started to break through and it was ‘scorchio’. Drummy’s good fortune with the toss continued as seven in a row was achieved and we suggested he buy a lottery ticket.

The decision to bat or bowl was pondered over for a while and I think Rhino’s preference won through as we batted first. The pitch was noticeably very dry. The doubts about the pitch were confirmed in the first over when puffs of dust were clearly seen coming from the surface and a few balls mis-behaved.

Watty was first to succumb when he tried to hit the first ball of the second over for four. It stopped on him after taking a chunk from the surface of the wicket and he was C & B. Drummy took up the number 3 slot for the first time this season and he and Howie ground it out for a while in very trying circumstance. There were some pretty hairy moments when Waqas found some unerring lift just short of a length and struck Pete a couple of times.

Howie was then out to a very sharp catch at Gully by Waqas off the bowling of Reddy. The indifferent bounce continued with a few high and a few low ones to contend with. Bobby would have been better served sitting inside watching the golf before he batted as I think doubts about the pitch might have contributed to his shot selection. Umi was out in similar fashion to Bobby and Beast managed out to bat after the red mist had cleared.

Beast looked intent on belting some early boundaries but only managed to edge behind. That left us 39 for 5 and needing a big partnership to recover the innings. Tony stuck in and managed to sneak a few here and there and hit a few good shots. Pete was still there battling hard and showing the kind of graft that the earlier batsmen would have been better served adopting.

Tony and Pete took the score along to 78 but sadly both fell in quick succession. No one else managed to last very long and we were all out for 83. Certainly a below par score but something around 120 would have been competitive on that wicket.

We didn’t get any wickets in the first few overs and Rhino was restricted slightly with a sore back. Once a few wickets did fall the score had crept along to 42 for 4 and there was still plenty to play for as another couple of quick ones would have put us in the ascendancy. Unfortunately a partnership started to develop and a couple of boundaries took the pressure off. When Waqas came in at 72 for 5 he immediately looked to hit some boundaries and the game quickly slipped away.

A poor game of cricket on a poor wicket and the debate about the decision to bat or bowl first continued on that night in the pub.
