Penicuik v Forfarshire Cricket Club 1st XI on Sun 13 Aug 2006 at 1pm
Forfarshire Cricket Club Lost 14 Runs

Match report There was quite a bit of cloud about when we left Forthill but the sky wasn’t threatening and the forecast was promising. It was the first trip to Penicuick for most of us and we had heard good things about the ground and the teas. We weren’t disappointed either, a small but very picturesque ground. The wicket looked quite good with a bit of green in the surface. Apparently the strip had been re-laid and hadn’t been used much before.

Having suffered the small changing rooms at Arbroath the previous day it was good to arrive and find that Penicuick had surpassed that. An Equally small changing room was shrunk further by the round dinning table they had seen fit to store in there. LJ made the mistake of pulling out a bag of lollipops that were intended for Pamela. Needless to say it wasn’t long before they became the second course of a swift lunch before the start of play. We were keen to bat first again but Drummy lost the toss and we were bowling.

The sun started to appear and the clouds had broken so the day warmed up a bit. For the second day running we got off to a good start with the new ball swinging a bit. Beast took a good catch at mid-off from a leading edge. Then in my next over the other opener was given a let off as he edged one that flew between Drummy and Howie at first slip for four runs. This was to be the first in a succession of boundaries scored through the slip region. There were 2 very good LBW appeals also turned down in the first few overs.

The pro was playing positively from ball one and the short boundaries and quick outfield meant the scoreboard ticked over quickly. As always seems to happen with these Readers balls they stop swingning after a few overs and then once the lacquer is off they swing again. Once it started to swing again life became more difficult for the batsmen and the pro was bowled off stump by a ‘jaffa’. This meant I leapfrogged Watty on the pro-counter with a tally of 5 for the season compared to his 4.

The overseas amateur came in and played and missed several times before edging one that dropped short of slip and quickly ran away for four. Watty then trapped the opener LBW and helped put the breaks on. After a bit more playing and missing and another edge that beat Drummy and flew for four there was a double change of bowling. Gally came on and immediately found some swing and Blackie continued his good form with a nice tight spell. Gally didn’t bowl as well as he normally does and was replaced by LJ.

LJ found a good length and bowled well but by now a troubling partnership had developed. There were a few dodgy singles attempted by the batsmen and a sharp bit of fielding by Gally found the overseas stranded mid-pitch and should have been easily run out. Unfortunately Blackie couldn’t gather the ball and the batsmen made his ground.

Umi came on and found his rhythm and bowled another really good spell. LJ found his reward with the wicket of kirkhope and broke the partnership. Umi then got a well deserved wicket, that of the new batsmen. I replaced LJ at the pavilion end and immediately got a result with the wicket of the overseas amateur.

We had done well to restrict them to 158-6 but were into the last ten overs and the batsmen were starting to play a bit more positively. A miss-queued drive by Willy Morton went high in the air out to the very short cover boundary. LJ made the ground to the ball but was put off by the proximity of the wall and I’m not sure if he got a hand on it in the end and the ball dropped over for a six. The batsmen repeated the shot next ball but got less bat on it, LJ failed to make the ground to the ball this time and was easily beaten by the spin on the first bounce and it trickled over the rope for four.

Umi picked up the wicket of Morton caught behind and Rhino came back into the attack and picked up a couple of wickets as they tried to hit some boundaries in the last few overs.

There was a good spread for tea with some very interesting combinations of fillings in the rolls. The lower-order settled into a sunny spot on the boundary to watch the start of the innings and read Pamela’s OK magazine. The bowling was quite tight and it was a slow start. Howie was first to depart caught at point. Fodder found scoring difficult but played himself in before trying to sweep the pro and being bowled behind his legs. Ryan was next out after making a patient 43 when he pushed at one that looked like it cut back and bowled him middle stump.

With three out and the score on 65 it was in the balance. Drummy was playing cautiously and he and Beast took the score to 95 before Drummy was out caught. The Beast hit the pro over the fence for a good six and took his score along to 41 before a very poor LBW decision was to be his demise.

Richie and Umi were chipping away at the total and keeping the singles ticking over. Unfortunately Richie was out caught behind to a good catch by the keeper and Umi was out caught shortly after. Tony was next to fall to a superb one handed catch by Kirkhope at extra cover. LJ and Blackie played well and put on another 20 runs to take us to 184. They both struck the ball well down the ground and found singles on both sides of the wicket. LJ biffed a good four through cover before he tried to smack one over extra and only found the hands of mid-off.

Blackie followed the instructions that I took out and whacked a six off Morton’s next ball. A quick single next over got Blackie back on strike and he was eyeing up the short mid-wicket boundary. Unfortunately he couldn’t quite get hold of it and was caught at mid-wicket.

Here endeth the promotion chances.
