Forfarshire Cricket Club 2nd XI v Arbroath on Sat 29 Apr 2006 at 1pm
Forfarshire Cricket Club Lost 4 wickets

Match report Blue skies, a good looking wicket and a quick outfield meant skipper Baz had no hesitation in batting first on winning the toss. With the top four bats from last weekend all unavailable or with the first team, the skipper and Craig opened. After a couple of deliveries rose sharply in the first over, it became apparent that the wicket might not be as easy to bat on as first thought.

The last ball of the second over saw the skip nick a decent ball to the keeper. At number 3, Ian hit his first ball through mid-wicket for 4 followed by 3 off the next before Craig decided to test Arbroath’s overseas amateurs fielding by calling for a quick single to point. A direct hit on one stump left no-one in any doubt. Bryce and Craig took the score from 12-2 on towards 50 before Bryce picked out the safe hands of Burno at mid-off. Gav’s extra net on Friday paid off, dealing only in boundaries to start with and it was good to watch a partnership with Craig taking shape. A feint edge down the leg-side saw the end of Craig and shortly after Gav left his ground against spinner Ramsay and was stumped, bringing to an end a well struck knock of 28. Blackie kept the scoreboard ticking over while Kean hit boundaries before one shot too many saw him miss a straight one. Rusty lifted spirits with a quick fire 18 including a straight six off the returning opening bowler Burnett.

At tea, 155 looked to be a little under par, but with the dry wicket causing an at times unpredictable bounce, a good bowling display would see us compete.

Arbroath openers Edwards and Parker put together a partnership of over 50 through good running and putting the bad ball to the boundary before Rusty’s introduction saw Sparky struck on the pads by a straight one. Safraz looked like he wanted to play shots from ball 1, but a rising delivery from Blackie caught his gloves on the way through to a diving Barry at first slip. Two balls later, a quicker delivery beat Gove, then two overs later a sharp catch from Kean at short cover turned the game in Forthill’s favour. Danger man Burno looked a little out of touch on return from his hip replacement op and was bowled by Blackie by way of an inside edge for 2, and hopes of a home win rose. James was brought back for a third spell but the cold wind made his return difficult, one delivery slipping from his hand to end up half way down a wicket several yards nearer the school than the one we were playing on. To the fielding side’s amazement, the batsman chose to play the stationary ball through mid-wicket for 4. Pedgrift struggled to master Blackies turn, and walked after a feint edge was picked up by Craig down the leg-side. Winker bowled a great second spell with his own sponsored ball, but could not find the edge of McGreavy’s bat, and with good runs coming from a young Burnett at the other end, the game slipped away from Forthill.

Forthill paid the price for not batting all of the 45 overs, as another 25 runs would have made it a last over game.
