Forfarshire Cricket Club 2nd XI v Mannofield on Sat 03 Jun 2006 at 1pm
Forfarshire Cricket Club Lost 20 runs

Match report Mannofield were the next visitors to the much feared "Fortress Forthill" on Saturday and the sun was shining strong as the Forthill lads lost the toss and were stuck in on what appeared to be a road.

The Aberdeenshire openers found life tough going as Winker and Jamesie started off with a good line and length until they managed to get on top of Jamsie and Kean was brought on rather ineffectively. LJ was given a shot after Winker and bowled a good line and length, however Kean was struggling up the hill and a change of end was in order for LJ to allow Blackie the safety of a HUGE boundary on the leg side.

Wickets were finding hard to come by and Aberdeenshire managed to get to 130 before Blackie managed to tempt the batsmen into a shot straight into Finbars hands in front of square on the leg side.

Things looked good for a while as Blackie and Finba managed to slow the run rate down and it was soon 2 down with another catch for Finba of Blackie. In came the overseas amateur and he looked pretty ordinary from the start missing a few balls from the two spinners and we felt confident we would get him out quickly. However he quickly found his game and with the aid of some woeful fielding and some massive hits managed to get to 90 not out off around 35 balls which meant we were left needing 318 runs in 45 overs which would of put us right up there in the history of the club.

The two batsmen chosen to initiate the run chase were Nelly and Wally with the later smashing his way to a quick fire 32 before missing a straight one, Neilly up the other end was slower in his run rate and managed to get to 15 before trying a Viv Richards and was caught behind. Contributions from Barry and Bryce helped the cause but eventually Ranji and LJ were at the wicket together needing well over 10 an over.

They pulled it off for around 17 overs and it really was a fantastic effort by the two of them. LJ was the first to go being stumped after reaching a well earned 63 of 63 balls, quickly followed 3 balls later by Ranji who had blasted his way sensationally to 93 of 60 balls. And with Blackie going in the same over for 3 the chances of us winning looked slim needing another 34 of 4 overs but it is credit to Kean and Winker that we managed to get to 297-9 with Winker out on the last ball of the game.

It was a fantastic effort for us to get to nearly 300. However our performance in the field left a lot to be desired and we really should of been chasing around 250 - 280 which would of given us a realistic chance to win. However it wasn’t to be and credit must go to John and Ranj for getting us into a chance to win when it looked impossible.
