Match report With the heat wave of the previous week, the Forthill boys were hoping for more of the same, however the haar was looking ominous, which meant it was a pretty humid and James assured us it would swing a bit. We probably had our strongest side of the season on paper, and some even said the strongest we’d had for a few years. We were confident of our batting line up and were pretty pleased to win the toss and have a bat.

LJ and Craig were the chosen two to open up, with LJ given license to play a few shots. Ted was starting off the umpiring and warned the batsmen to not get hit on the pads as he was still keen to use his new bat and the finger was likely to go up. After a few pretty loose overs from the Stoneywood openers and some interesting chat from the younger members of the away team we were well up at 5/6 and over. After LJ had smacked a few boundaries Craig was hit on the pads and with Ted at the other end the finger wasn’t very slow to go up, but to be fair it looked out from square leg. LJ followed soon after when he lobbed one up to cover. This meant we had Neily and Miersy together. Neily looked happy to nudge about for a few overs and Miersy played a few cracking shots before middling one to the keeper and although he turned his back, James had the finger up as well, and he was sent on his way.

Baz and Biggy came and went soon after, and we were beginning to look in a fair bit of trouble at 80-5. We weren’t panicking though as we still had two good batsmen in Neily and Butts at the crease and AB, the Superstar, was due in next. What we needed was a good partnership and both of them batted really well with Neily making a good half century before miss-timing one. This brought Aman in to play an entertaining cameo, with shots all round the ground, and a useful 50 which meant we were looking at posting 250+. Sometimes it’s easy to forget he’s only 14 as some of the shots were outstanding. When Aman was bowled playing one shot too many, I strode out to the crease, looking to maybe get a red-inker, but after hitting two 2s first up I faced maybe the best delivery of the day, which swung both ways and needless to say I was clean bowled…again. There’s a fair chance that I played across a straight full toss again though, whilst eyeing up cow corner.

This brought Ted and the new bat to the crease and after smoking a few, the new bat sounding pretty good, he also departed caught at long-on by, as Deano put it, “a rose amongst thorns”. James went in and he and Butts got us up past 260 with the latter just missing out on a deserved 50, although he looked as though he might have struggled to run another 3 runs. So after a mammoth 3 and a half hours it was finally time for tea with 263 on the board.

James and I took the new ball, and as James said it did swing around a bit early on with both of us beating the outside edge frequently. And although we had bowled pretty well they were still ticking along. James got the breakthrough with a diving caught and bowled, however this failed to spark a collapse and the Stoneywood England Internationalist was at the crease before departing for the next test on Thursday.

They were beginning to look comfortable and LJ and Aman came on to try and pick up our 2nd wicket. The Stoneywood opener seemed keen to make the game last even longer by taking a drinks break every 10 overs. But when Ted and Miersy came on at a stage where the game could have gone either way and both took good wickets to dismiss the danger men. Craig took a good catch and so did Ted of his own bowling although it looked at one stage like he might topple over backwards. Ted also picked up an LBW, which Ted assured us was the first time Dick’s given him a decision in 30 years. James also took a couple of great catches at long-on with the crocodile school of catching paying dividends, even under some pressure from James Jnr and Mikey re-enacting Pirates of the Caribbean under the blue tarpaulin. It’s a shame one of them was taken over the rope and went down as a 6. James also assured us that he hasn’t dropped a catch in 30 years, and nobody could argue with him. By this stage the game was all but over and the haar was now almost engulfing Forthill. Butts was given the chance to bowl the last over and pick up a wicket but it never quite happened.

Overall a good win for Forthill, notable performances going to Neily, Butts and Aman in the batting, and Ted and Miersy in the bowling. Miersy using the slower ball/leg spinner to great effect.

So to next week and the dreaded trip to Huntly.
