Huntly v Forfarshire Cricket Club 2nd XI on Sat 29 Jul 2006 at 1pm
Forfarshire Cricket Club Lost 16 runs

Match report The meet time for Saturday was an early 9am, and thanks to Ted we were anxiously awaiting a big 25 seater to drive us up to Huntly. When the slightly smaller 12 seater arrived, Biggy looked more than slightly disappointed as he was hoping for a kip after the night shift and had even brought a pillow. Anyway once the skipper finally arrived all 11 plus our sole supporter Pamela piled on the Vengabus.

The journey seemed a lot quicker than usual, although the Travis CD on repeat all the way didn’t help much. We even had time to stop in Tillymorgan at the Morgan McVeigh's Tearoom for a spot of lunch. Far more upmarket than the usual Burger King or McDonald’s although Neily wasn’t too impressed with the prices.

Once finally at the ground we discovered only 2 of the opposition present pushing the covers off and the changing rooms locked. After a stroll out to the wicket, which some say resembled a trampoline, and back, the changing rooms were finally open. 10 of us went out for a warm up while Biggy caught 40 winks and Baz won the toss a decided to bowl. We felt that the wicket might do a bit if it was full, but anything short would just sit up and probably get dispatched. It was also Simmy Jnrs 2nd team debut, although it didn’t get off to the best of starts, as he was obviously too excited when he packed his bag and had only brought one shoe and so had to field in Craig’s trainers.

So LJ and I took the new ball/recoup and Baz maintained that it needed to be full and even a low full toss would be okay as it would swing. I took this a bit too literally and bowled 3 full tosses in the first over and needless to say it went for 12 runs. However I still reckon the pitch was a yard shorter than usual.

After settling down the two of us bowled quite well in partnership and were causing the Huntly pair a few problems with swing and a bit of indifferent bounce. This almost brought the end of the Pro as he edged one, but it was a tough chance and Ted could only get one hand on it in the Gully and it didn’t quite stick. The breakthrough finally came when the edge of the bat was found again and the other opener fell to a great one handed catch from Miersy at second slip. This brought in the overseas Amateur and to begin with they started quite slowly, happy to pick up singles. With the introduction of Ted and Miersy they began to increase the run rate with some excellent running between the wickets aided by some ordinary fielding in places. They began to put the bad ball away for 4 as well and a couple more chances went down in the gully and covers. Danny was brought on to try and pick up the wicket and he too took the full toss suggestion too literally also and was dispatched over the fence 3 times in his first over. For some reason in his second over he continued with the full toss approach, but the Huntly pro was out-foxed and tried one too many times to put him into the trees and was caught by LJ on the boundary, even with Miersy doing his best to put him off by first calling it his and then, shouting “no it’s not, its yours LJ!”. Baz also managed to make a chance off the top edge look like a Mr Bean Xmas special. Gav was given a solitary over, and although the first ball went for 6, the rest of the over caused the batsmen a few problems. With the Pro out, the amateur continued to build a big innings and reached his ton with plenty of overs left, but was out soon afterwards to Cammy.

Barry brought himself on to bowl at the death and apart from the occasional token wide restricted them quite well. LJ was also brought back on and got a well deserved wicket to complete pretty good figures. They finished on 276 and maybe if we had been a bit sharper in the field at points it might have been less. However we still felt we could chase it with our batting line up.

LJ and Craig opened up again and we were hoping to get off to a decent start. The Huntly Pro/Amateur combination opened up the bowling and as I was umpiring I got a decent look at what it was doing. It looked pretty difficult with both of them swinging it both ways and getting it to seam around a bit as well. Both of our pair were cut in half a couple of times and there were a few plays and misses as well. They decided the best option was to graft for a bit and not worry too much about the low run rate as the other bowlers hopefully wouldn’t be as tricky to face. They both managed to keep their wickets intact until a crazy run out ended Craig’s innings. I have to admit it did look pretty funny from the umpire’s perspective when both batsmen were at the same end giving each other the same bemused expression.

This brought Miersy to the crease and with a few risky shots and a few boundaries he and LJ began to build a good partnership. Miersy reached a quick 50 and LJ followed soon after, although Pamela missed him raise his bat as she was fast asleep at the boundary. The run rate was now up at 9/10 an over and the two of them began to play some big shots with a few deliveries sailing over the rope. Both batsmen were now in the 90s and we felt if both or one of them could stay there to the end we had a chance.

Unfortunately they both missed out on what would have been great hundreds. LJ bowled trying for another maximum on 95, and Miersy gunned by Craig on 98, although the consensus was that he was probably out, so well done to Craig for giving a decision where others may not have. This meant the middle order had to try and come in and get 10 an over with a failing light and in
the end proved too difficult. Falling not too far short of 270 odd we felt was a decent effort and had a few things gone our way at various points we may well have won this match.

We didn’t though, and so it was back on the bus for the Red Stripe challenge and few songs from Ted. Next year make sure you have your handkerchiefs and golf balls with you.
