Match report
Match Report by Clark
Forfarshire visited Poloc in the first round of the Scottish Cup on a bright sunny day. The majority of the team arrived on time, however art loving captain Drummy couldn't drag himself away from the Burrell Collection and it was left to Ryan to volunteer himself to be team tosser for the day. He called correctly and chose to bat first on a grassy looking pitch.
His decision to bat first on a green top against a professional opening bowler backed up by an overseas amateur opening bowler seemed a strange one and when after a few overs the scoreboard showed 14 for 4 the Forfs players were all wishing that Drummy hadn't visited that last hall full of Egyptian artefacts.
A semblance of a recovery was put into place by young guns Mohammed and Cannon who mixed solid defence with controlled aggression to try and save Watson's bacon. Cannon and Mohammed soon went however and when Drummy got trapped in front it was looking very gloomy for the Forfs. If ever the tail needed to wag today was the day, but when Quinn was bowled by the returning pro it signalled the end of a poor Forfs innings with only 116 on the board.
A hearty tea was had whilst watching some World Cup football and there was little sign of the drama which was to unfold.
Poloc sent in their big hitters first and there was immediate drama when former Dunfermline legend Zulfiquar now playing for Poloc asked for the sightscreen to be moved before a ball was bowled. This was met with howls of derision from the Forfs foreign contingent positioned in the slips and this proved a sign of things to come.
Zulfiquar and his opening partner Sajjad seemed intent on knocking off the required runs quickly and played a series of expansive shots. On this form it can surely only be a matter of time before Zulfiquar replaces Watson in the Scotland set up.
With the score at 35 for no wicket and Poloc apparently coasting to victory, Zulfi turned a short ball on to the leg side and called Sajjad for a run. Under normal conditions it would have been a regulation single, but the combination of Sajjad's ambling, Clark's age and injury defying quick movement at mid wicket and a direct hit saw Sajjad run out.
The game then changed. Watson turned up the verbal heat on anyone wearing a Poloc shirt (especially Zulfi) and Gally was a man transformed. Gally's first four overs had been fairly innocuous against the Poloc onslaught but suddenly he was more Wasim Akram than Dibbly Dobbly and ran through the Poloc top order.
Included in his scalps was the prize wicket in Scottish cricket of Zulfiquar who he trapped in front with a vicious in-swinging yorker. Poloc suddenly found themselves on the end of Gally's five wicket haul (helped by an amazing Miersy catch at slip) and with Watson bowling (and talking) aggressively at the other end, the Forfs found themselves in sight of the most unlikely victory.
However the Poloc number 10 had other ideas and started playing some nice shots and got his side back into the game and the Forfs knew that even when the ninth wicket went down, former Forf Adrees was a very useful number eleven to be coming in. The fact that Adreesy was spotted pre match assisting with rope duties made us all realise he was taking this very seriously indeed. So this proved as he melted Quinno through extra cover for two stunning fours and suddenly Poloc were within six runs of victory.
With the game in the balance Watson was recalled to the attack and with him intent on ensuring his toss earlier in the day would not be blamed for the defeat he steamed in and was duly rewarded when he took the final wicket trapping the home danger man plumb in front of the wickets. The batsmen threw his bat in frustration and the Forfs enjoyed a group cuddle.
The Forfs fight-back was complete and it was a distraught home side who were out of the cup for another year.
Gally deservedly picked up the sponsors case of Chardonnay as man of the match and on this form it wont be long before he is enjoying another five wicket haul.
The Forfs were in good mood on the journey home and can now look forward to a home tie against Falkland in the next round. Special mention must go to LJ who broke the supporters most “Most WKD's in a Day” record and enters the club's record books as a result.
Well done Forfs and in the words of Miersy......."catches win matches"......or words to that effect!
