Forfarshire Cricket Club 3rd XI v Crieff on Sun 04 Jun 2006 at 1pm
Match was Drawn

Match report Bright sunshine and a pleasant breeze greeted the players of Forthill XI and Crieff as they descended on Forthill for this Strathmore Union Division 2 fixture. Crieff finished runners up in the league last year and with Forthill having started the season with three wins out of three an exciting match was on the cards.

Simmy returned from the toss without revealing whether he had won or not, but the upshot was it was Forthill who took first use of an excellent looking strip. The following hours saw records tumble, with most of the plaudits falling to young openers Craig and Gavin. It is hard to believe that these boys are both still only 15 years old, such is their maturity when out in the middle. Both faced some useful opening bowling but tucked the ball into the gaps and ran well, as well as punishing the bad ball. The result was the scoreboard raced along and before we knew it a 50 run opening stand had been posted.

Before long this had been doubled to a century and the older heads all believed that it would surely have been a club record for two 15 year olds to put on a century stand. Thoughts started to turn to the possibility of both batsmen achieving a century for the first time in their own right and with the pair of them having taken their opening stand to a mighty 175, it was something of a shock when Craig nicked one through to the keeper. He had made a chanceless 90 and batted brilliantly and on this form it wont be long before Craig racks up the magic three figure score.

Andrew came in at number three and immediately started playing well and Gavin was also opening his shoulders. Unfortunately, Gavin also fell short of the three figures but a fine 72 was his reward.

Once again, the sight of two promising youngsters putting on 175 is testament to the youth policy the club has adopted and the important role the Forthill XI side plays in the development of the clubs emerging talent. Well done Craig and Gavin.

The final overs of the innings saw Simmy with an eye on an early declaration and Clark and Andy followed his instructions by playing a few shots and Simmy declared the innings over after 40 overs with the score a healthy 295 for 2.

Under the competition rules, this gave Crieff 50 overs batting time and they started well with Forthill unable to make the early breakthrough they needed in order to try and force a victory. Eventually Teddy picked up the first wicket of the innings and once again he showed the youngsters the virtue of accurate bowling, returning figures of 2 for 18 on a batsmen's wicket.

Crieff had an eye on an unlikely victory at more than one stage and Forthill were forced on the defensive, however a combination of attacking batting and some slightly improved bowling saw wickets start to tumble. With a couple of overs left Crieff's last pair were at the wicket and in spite of a run out opportunity and some excellent last over bowling by Andy, the final pair held out and Forthill had to settle for a draw.

A total of 19 points were accrued and after 4 matches Forthill sit at the top of the league on 94%.

In summary, a fine batting display set up a victory opportunity, but the bowling and fielding displays were not of the high standard set so far this season. None the less, there were many positives to take from the game and Forthill head in to next week's top of the table clash away to Montrose in fine fettle. The man of the match award went to Craig for his fine 90 and he was presented with his voucher to Saks Hairdressers by the match sponsors.

Supporters should note that team scorer Dave T. will be running a supporters bus to next week's match. Pick up's will be at Dundee Ice Rink and Forthill SC and Freda has agreed to come along and give Dave a hand. There will be a stop off at Peppos fish bar for lunch on the way there and supper on the way back. Please note also that Dave will be doing a sponsored lawn mower push this week in aid of club funds and anyone wishing to sponsor Dave should contact him through the club.

One final note, a new DVD is also being released to help funds. Called "How Not To Celebrate Taking A Wicket", it will feature Kean doing a silly little dance.
