Forfarshire Cricket Club Won 52 runs
Match report
Forthill travelled up the coast on Sunday for a top-of-the-table clash with Montrose. Our arrival found the usually wind-swept Union Park bathed in sunshine with the temperature soaring to 25C. Despite the fine weather, the previously advertised supporters bus failed to attract sufficient numbers, and was cancelled.
Runs aplenty were expected on the tinder dry outfield, and there was a mood of expectation with Forthill’s top order all finding some form in recent weeks, as our openers made their way to the middle. Robbie’s 10 day break in Portugal didn’t help his batting though, and he returned to the sidelines with 5 runs to his name.
Craig and Gav picked up where they left off last week, and knocked the ball around with ease until the introduction of Devnani from the football park end caused mayhem. The seemingly innocuous grenades that were being delivered accounted for Gav and Andy in consecutive balls. Andy soon became the 3rd victim of the high flighty stuff. Craig went on to make a fine 26 before a Thorogood delivery flew from just short of a length, the keeper making no mistake with the catch behind.
Elliot made a welcome return to the team from his job at PC World, but unfortunately picked out the safe hands of Christie at long on, and was dismissed for a valuable 23.
With six wickets down for about 100, Simmy and Pottsy played safely until the 35th over, then planned to push on a bit. The plan worked well, Simmy knocking up a well timed 42 despite a re-occurrence of a leg injury, and a century partnership resulted. The spinner from the gardens end proved to Ian's liking and was despatched over the ropes a couple of times before a hit-and-run single went all wrong and he was run out for 59.
Ted and Mo picked up a few more valuable runs at the end of the innings to post a score of 214 which was felt to be slightly under par given the quick outfield.
Montrose have one of the best top orders in the division, and are always tricky to bowl out, so accurate bowling was required. Andy was disappointed to be taken out of the attack after just 2 overs, but this handed Mo the opportunity to show what he could do – and he responded with two wickets in quick succession. 28 for 2. Eight overs later the stumps were twice again sent flying by Mo to make it 61-4, the Montrose batters finding Mo’s swing difficult to deal with - especially with Asif bowling a tight line at the other end.
Thorogood and Devnani took the score passed 100 and just as the partnership was accelerating, Gav took a good catch at long-on in a much needed breakthrough, Thorogood out for 31. Our off-spin duo of Walker and McCandless worked well together, Elliot going on to get 3 wickets and Ted 1.
For the second week running, Forthill XI had the opposition 9 down with just a few overs left, so the ball was handed back to Andy. He bowled quick and straight, and with the last ball of the 44th over, a yorker saw centre stump uprooted - a hard earned 25 points won in a good team effort.
Forthill XI now have a well earned weekend off to watch the first team play on Elie Beach before a two game weekend - away to Northern on Saturday 24th and away to Perth on Sunday 25th June. Bookings for an overnight stay in the Salutation Hotel are now being taken.
