Perth v Forfarshire Cricket Club Forthill 2nd XI on Sun 25 Jun 2006 at 1pm

Match report
It's official. Forthill XI don't like playing in Perth. Whether it is the inner city vibe or closeness to McDiarmid Park, the previously magnificent league record of the Ferry side took a Dean type battering at the weekend when a sorry defeat on Saturday was followed by a loosing draw in the Fair City.
That we achieved a draw was thanks to a hobbling skipper who showed his ability when the chips are down (unlike most of the gamblers at the casino night)and an uncharacteristic rearguard action from Teddy who blocked like Drummy in his prime at the end. Chasing 175 the Forthill lads batted poorly from the start and a regular fall of wickets made the pursuit of the target a constant uphill struggle and two run outs didn't help the cause. Only Robbie was able to stay at the crease for a prolonged period although his innings was more of a sheet anchor role than one of flamboyant stroke play.
To be fair, Perth bowled and fielded well and showed great enthusiasm throughout the innings. The final total of 117 for 9 was a disappointing one and further dented Forthill's lead at the top of the table, although there was some satisfaction in denying Perth maximum points.
In the field Forthill had an average day with the ball. Perth had a mixture of blockers and hitters and one of the blockers stuck in for a long period and a couple of the hitters came off. They had a lengthy tail which was very quickly cleaned up by Danny who bowled very well and finished with great figures of 5 for 12.
The Forthill cause wasn't helped when the Perth opener clearly nicked one behind then decided half way to the marquee that he wasn't going to walk after all and came back and stood his ground. His team mate umpire decided not to give the decision much to the consternation of the fielding side. At this level of cricket, it is difficult to umpire against your own team mates, however fair play surely must prevail and the initial onus must be on the batsman to walk when he knows he is out. Thereafter it is also essential for the umpire to make a fair decision irrespective of friendship. It is hoped that we have no part in further incidents of this nature for the remainder of the season.
The drinks break proved interesting, especially when on the resumption of play Simmy realised he was still in possession of his glass of blackcurrant juice whilst play was going on. He initially deposited it at mid wicket and their were frantic looks in the rule book to decide what the outcome would be if the ball struck the skippers juice? The need for a decision was removed when first the glass was placed behind the umpire and then removed from the field of play.
In the end, a losing draw was about right and with a break from league action next week Forthill will hopefully regroup and get things together before the massive table topping clash at Rossie Priory a week on Sunday.
A bus will once again be running to this game with pick ups at the PO Bar, Four M Accountants, Tay Ferries and BP Bullionfield. All names to Bus Convenor Dave Thomson before Friday.
Finally, the Perth to Dundee post match Rally was won by Teddy in the souped up Jaguar. Clark came second in his beat up Daewoo and in spite of leaving first and taking an illegal short cut through Perth to avoid the traffic lights, Ian still came in last in his turbo charged Astra.
The Rossie rally is much anticipated by all and this sprint course will be very interesting, especially if Simmy drives and takes advantage of his preferred citizen's status to break speed limits. That is if he is sober enough to drive?
