Freuchie v Forfarshire Cricket Club 1st XI on Sat 22 Apr 2006 at 1pm
Forfarshire Cricket Club Lost 3 wickets

Match report The skies were grey but fair and the wind was blowing hard making it a cold day for the season opener. We travelled to Freuchie with a few first team players in the second team for their first league game. We lost the toss and were asked to bat first on a slightly damp but pretty good April wicket. It was hard going at the beginning with both openers bowling well and taking advantage of the conditions. Dalton was playing under a slight injury cloud and this proved to be his undoing when he was cleaned up by a good Yorker. Freuchie’s South African left-arm seamer was enjoying charging down the hill with the wind at his back. Dean was sent in as pinch hitter but sadly only managed to trouble the wickets column.

Pete and Ryan were watchful but there weren’t any easy pickings. The spinner was brought into the attack and it wasn’t long before Ryan, attempting to dominate, was out stumped. Tony (Radcliffe) came in having not had any practice this season and was in surprisingly good touch. He and Pete put together an important partnership until Pete was out trying to force the pace a bit. Umi took control of things and batted really well with some good aggressive strokes. Tony was dropped on 48 and then managed to get himself caught on 49 missing out on a deserved fifty. Umi kept up the tempo until the last few overs when he was out for good half-century. From there the tale collapsed with a couple of unfortunate decisions contributing to our all out total.

It was now time for our Irish left-arm seamer to enjoy running down the hill with the wind at his back. The new boy, Richie, settled into a good line and length after a couple of wayward deliveries early on and found some good movement in the helpful conditions. Running up the hill into the wind proved not to be as onerous as I had suspected and I bowled my overs straight through. Wickets fell at regular intervals as Ryan replaced Rich and Aman came on but didn’t quite find his line and length. Umair showed his ability as an all-rounder with a good spell of spin bowling. There strength was in depth of batting with Scott Birrell coming in at 9. Scott Gourlay showed his class with an excellent innings that proved to be the difference. We didn’t field as well as we would have liked but it was a good game that we lost by just 3 wickets and an over to spare.
