Match report
Season 2007 opened for the third team on Sunday with a home fixture against Perth XI. A healthy crowd gathered to see the first ever fixture for the thirds in the dizzy heights of the First Division and there was especially keen interest in the two new signings in the Forthill ranks.
With skipper Simmy off on a binge drinking weekend ( masquerading as a golf trip) it was left to Clark to skipper the home side and he started off by losing the toss and the home team were inserted on a softish looking track. It would appear that the new style covers being built from a “Make Your Own Covers” airfix kit which Dick got for his Xmas are not quite doing the intended job as yet.
New signing Shabahz was given a chance to shine at the top of the order and he played some interesting attacking shots on his way to 8. Unfortunately he was quickly back in the hutch along with Gav. Ian and Clark started to rebuild the innings, they took the score nicely up to 82 before Clark decided to try and smack their best bowler into the play park and was duly bowled. A few balls later Ian decided to try and smack their best bowler into the play park and was also duly bowled.
From there a rapid collapse ensued with the middle order going down like the Titanic on a bad day and it was left to young Kevin to finish not out and bat with the maturity and skill required to ensure the overs were used up. He was ably assisted by Steeley ( in freshly pressed underpants) and Jim who also helped to get the score up to a slightly more respectable 147 when the last wicket fell in the 45th over.
A nice selection of sandwiches was on hand and the hot cup of Freda tea was welcomed after a chilly afternoon in the field.
Our only hope was to get some early wickets and we managed to snare one of the Perth openers early doors to raise our hopes. However some fine play by Perth saw them race towards the target and in spite of a spirited effort in the field they quickly had a victory in sight. The fielding highlight was a magnificent tumbling catch at deep point from Jean which delighted the watching home support. The skipper belatedly introduced Shabahz into the attack and he knocked the stumps over twice, but at the end Perth got home with five wickets to spare.
The local authority will be pleased to note that the new extra strength sheeting installed on the school roof passed it’s cricket ball test on Sunday.
So, Forthill XI ended up with a disappointing home defeat to start the season. The jump in ability in this division was obvious from last year and the home team will need to apply themselves better with the bat and bowl tighter lines if they are to compete successfully. Having said that, it was the first game of the season for us all and hopefully the cobwebs will have been blown away to some degree.
Some of the stand-in skipper’s decisions could certainly be called in to question and a strange batting order, unconventional field placings, dodgy bowling changes and forgetting to lock the score box are all causes for real concern. It was however thought that the chanting of “Clark Must Go” by an ex players group lead by Dave Thomson was a little bit harsh. Particularly given that the ringleader spent most of his time in the kitchen with the club stewardess as opposed to watching the game.
So next week it is a home all ticket clash with last year’s league runners up Strathearn to look forward to. With double training sessions ordered this week by Simmy from his secret drinking den in Northern Scotland an improved performance can be anticipated next week.
Season ticket holders are reminded that it is voucher two for next weeks game. Photo ID is also required for entry
