Forfarshire Cricket Club Forthill 2nd XI v Mayfield on Sun 03 Jun 2007 at 1pm
Forfarshire Cricket Club Won 7 wickets
Match report
The selection committee wielded the mighty axe after last week’s debacle and only four players survived from the Norwood Gang Of Ten. Messrs Sim, Findlay, Shabaz and Inglis were rewarded for their combined total of 19 runs from the previous week with retained places in the starting line up. The rest were canned.
Another chilly day was in evidence as the players rolled up to the ground. The outfield had grown six inches after heavy overnight rain and with the groundsman in his kip it was agreed the aerial route would be needed if boundaries were to be struck today.
Mayfield batted first and Asif and the Doctor opened up. As ever, Asif picked up an early wicket and as ever the Doctor didn’t. Thomson and Pennycook combined with a fine second wicket stand and it was a relief to the home fans when both fell in quick succession. The latter Mayfield batsmen hit some fine attacking shots and the final total set of 228 for 7 seemed formidable on an outfield resembling a field of swishing barley.
Asif again bowled well and was well supported by young Kevin who returned fine figures of 2 for 10 from 5 tight overs.
Simmy called the groundsman at half time with a view to giving the outfield a swift cut but he was still asleep. So instead he piled into the cakes. Sim Junior opened up with debutant Barry and they went against the script of recent weeks by putting on fifty plus for the first wicket. Barry made a fine 45 before falling and Andy soon followed. However Steve joined Steven and together they moved towards the total – and Steven moved towards a century. Unfortunately he fell on 83 but what a fine innings. Finbar joined Steve and they saw the side through to a fine 7 wicket victory with more than 9 overs to spare.
This was undoubtedly a fine morale boosting victory for Forthill XI. Special plaudits clearly go to Steven and it was no surprise when he scooped the Man Of The Match Award which fittingly for a student was a years supply of soap courtesy of Imperial Lather. An instruction booklet was also provided.
Next week sees Forthill on the road to Arbroath. This unfortunately coincides with the annual vist to Elie to play the Ship Inn on the beach and the match secretary has taken some stick over this fixture clash. In an attempt to make amends to the guys playing at Arbroath, the following arrangements have been put in place.
All players will travel on the bus. Thomson Tours have arranged an executive coach with DVD player so we can watch the Best Of Ted on the way home. Arbroath have agreed to let us put 6 tonnes of sand in their car park to create a virtual beach. Players should wear shorts, sunglasses and bring a bucket and spade. Barbecued smokies will be made available to all players and visitors. Ted’s new book – Party Games For Cricketers – will be distributed and we will challenge the locals to various fun events. The game is being sponsored by Carlsberg and players will indulge in copious pre match swilling. The batting order will be drawn out of a hat – nothing new there I guess.
The bus will return in unison with the Elie coach and we will rendezvous in the Post Office bar around 10.30pm before heading off to Scotland’s leading curry house – The Gulistan – for late night pakoras.
All names and deposits should be paid to Dave Thomson of Thomson Tours before Friday. Pick up points will be Dave’s house, the cash and carry, Rembrand building supplies, toys r us, Freda’s and the club.
