Forfarshire Cricket Club Forthill 2nd XI v Arbroath XI on Sun 17 Jun 2007 at 1pm
Forfarshire Cricket Club Won 4 wickets
Match report
The rains of the week thankfully relented and a pleasant day welcomed the players and fans to Forthill. For the second week running Forthill XI were matched against their local rivals from Arbroath and after last weeks victory the home side were in confident mood.
With the kick off time fast approaching and only ten men in the home changing room, a search party was despatched to the seafront to find the skipper floating harmlessly off Broughty Harbour in his new superfast Pedalo which he was given for Father’s Day. After a quick cup of strong black coffee he was despatched to the middle where he successfully won the toss and chose to field first on a nice looking pitch.
It was nice to see Ian back in the line up after the career threatening laceration he suffered when taking a blinder earlier in the season. With the assistance of a Pleasure Aid finger strengthening device he declared himself fit and able to play to the joy of the home fans.
Asif took first over and got some vicious swing and it was plenty good enough to despatch Pedgrift junior back to the pavilion without troubling the scorers. As a reward for some super accurate bowling in previous weeks, Kevin shared the new ball and quickly dropped on an immaculate line and length which made scoring difficult for the opening pair. Sinclair in particular had trouble in finding the boundary and a slow passage of play ensued. Credit must be given to Asif and Kevin for some terrific bowling on a good pitch.
Kevin was replaced by Mo and Asif finished ten great overs to be replaced by Kean at the Nursery Road end. This was Kean’s first game back at Forthill following his June transfer window switch from Kinloch and the fans were out in force to welcome him back. The flowing locks swishing in the breeze as he comes bouncing into the wicket are a joy to behold. Goldilocks springs to mind………….
The three bears were behind the wicket in the shape of messrs Sim Sr, Sim Jr and Findlay and they were waiting to gobble up any catches that came their way.
The Arbroath innings stumbled along against some decent bowling and Finbar came on to replace Mo and swiftly brought the innings to close. A fine display of leg spin bowling proved too much for the Lichties and John finished with the fine figures of 5 for 28. Goldilocks chipped in with 3 for 30.
With an early close to the innings Freda and her team of tea ladies were caught a bit short so the senior team members helped to get things ready. Clark took charge of the sandwiches and the dispensing of milk and he was looking for Simmy to bring through the cakes. After a lengthy delay and still no sign of the cakes, Clark headed back to the kitchen to find the skipper seeming more intent on eating the cakes as opposed to bringing them through to share with everyone else. Whilst the tea in now way matched the Lochlands Banquet of last week, credit must be given to certain team members for putting in an added effort on the sandwich front. To whoever brought the bunch of bananas…….. the phrase “could have done better” springs to mind! Top marks to Goldilocks for the porridge.
Chasing a target of 121 on a nice track, the home team were confident. Dean and BP opened up and unfortunately Dynamite was back in the hutch quickly. BP dispelled his new nickname by scoring runs in front of the wicket and young Kevin was giving solid support at number three. Indeed it was something of a surprise when he got out. Clark joined Steven and the score was moving on nicely when Steven fell to a fine catch at mid off and Ian came to the wicket. Once again the scoreboard was moving nicely when Clark called for a second run which he may well have made twenty years ago but was unable to complete at this time of his life and he was run out for 27.
Ian and Finbar moved the score along well and it was unfortunate that with just three runs required Finbar was well caught in the gully and then Asif was bowled at the same juncture. Credit must be given to Anderson from Arbroath who after some difficulties early in his spell bowled very well indeed. As it was, the final winning run came from a wide and Forthill had another 25 points in the bag. This was a good bowling display from Forthill and credit must go to all of the bowlers for a great effort. Some of the fielding and catching was a little sloppy and if it had been tighter we could have been chasing an even lower total. The batters did what was required and all in all this was another comfortable win.
The Man Of The Match Award is chosen by the visiting side, it was therefore slightly disappointing to note that they decided to head away en masse from Forthill without indulging in even one post match pint and also therefore gave no input into the game’s top performer. However, the home fans took on the decision and decided unanimously that Finbar was Man Of The Match for his five wicket haul and he took away the sponsors prize of a bunch of bananas. Many thanks to Geest.
This week sees the Forthill XI in midweek cup action with a Two Counties Cup semi final away to Brechin. This is followed by a visit to Cupar on Sunday on league duty. Following the unfortunate disappearance of team transport co-ordinator Dave, no bus will run to these fixtures.
However, Cully has agreed to take the club tractor up to Brechin this week ( back roads via Newbigging) and anyone wishing to travel should meet at Forthill at 7.00 am on Thursday. Transport to Cupar is being explored but it is looking likely that a club steamer will be hired to take us to Tayport from where lifts can be thumbed to Cupar. Meet Tay Ferries 11am.
