Mayfield v Forfarshire Cricket Club 3rd XI on Sun 26 Aug 2007 at 1pm
Forfarshire Cricket Club Won 25 runs

Match report There were a few bleary eyes amongst the team following Saturday’s night out as we gathered at Forthill for the trip to Perth to take on Mayfield in the last league of the 2007 season.

Doo’cot Park was bathed in sunshine and the scene was perfect for cricket. The wicket looked to be a good one, with just a hint of green to keep the bowlers interested and Simmy snr was keen to give his batters first use of the wicket – and backed them to post a suitable total after winning the toss and electing to bat.

Mayfield’s opening attacked found some swing early on, and Gav and Stephen played a couple of watchful overs before their increasing confidence saw the score advancing well with a number of well placed shots. Simmy jnr was out with the total approaching 50 in a useful opening partnership.

Gav passed 50 with ease, and along with Craig took the score past the 100 mark inside 20 overs. Thoughts of a maiden ton were dashed when Gav was stumped for 70. Craig followed soon after, yorked for a quick 45. Finbar and Ian were under instruction to build a partnership and did so before John was surprised by a low full toss and was bowled for 21. With 10 overs and 5 wickets left, Ian and Goose pushed the score past 200 and took advantage of the fielders heads being down. Forthill XI finished on 253-6.

Mo and Kev opened the bowling, and found the Mayfield openers keen to punish any loose delivery and it took until the 15th over before Jinglis foxed out Riley with a well flighted straight one. Kean looked to have suffered a “Simon Jones” like injury when a sliding stop went wrong, but after a thorough examination from the team doctor, he was pronounced fit to bowl – and his 10 overs for 33 runs were welcomed by all as the home team skipper Thomson tried to keep the home total up with the required rate. He eventually fell to a diving catch from Mo for 41. Pennycook continued where Thomson left off, but Kean fought back and after a close LBW decision was turned down, the next ball sent the bails flying, to the delight of the Forthill team.

A couple of well executed run-outs gave Forthill XI the edge in the game, as the required run rate passed 9-an-over. A hard hit 45 from G.Thomson kept the game interesting right up to last over at which point Simmy decided with 34 required, Craig could bowl the last over.

No records were set in that over, and Forthill XI collected 25 well earned points before heading to a nearby Burger King to celebrate their efforts, the league report card reading played 12, won 6, lost 6 and a comfortable mid-table league position.
