Forfarshire Cricket Club Won 5 wickets
Match report
It was a damp morning but fortunately we got the season underway at Forthill. We had a mixed side to take on High School, with several people unavailable with varying excuses. The toss was lost and we had a bowl first on what looked a reasonable early season wicket. After an early wicket fell the batsmen soon found some momentum and were reaching the boundary regularly. The outfield had dried up from the morning rain and the ball was running quite quickly. The fielding was quite tidy but as often happens at the start of the season the catching wasn’t. Several chances went to ground some harder than others and both batsmen capitalised on their good fortune.
Perera completed a quick-fire half-century which included some high quality strokes as well as a few more agricultural ones. The partnership was ended when Miersy took a comfortable catch in the covers to dismiss Perera. The introduction of Cam’s legspin saw the breaks applied, a tidy spell of bowling was rewarded with a wicket from a good piece of work behind the stumps by Drummy.
Wickets fell regularly and High School couldn’t maintain the early momentum after the surprise introduction of the Weed. It looks like Tony has his eye on Howie’s bowling spot, picking up 2 wickets in an economical spell. Dynamite Dean was thrown the ball for the last couple of overs and bowled well, picking up three wickets.
The tea was above our normal standards, thanks mainly to the enhancements that Freda provided to our usual rolls. The skipper took up the opening spot with Bobby Cannon who had decided that Blackie’s bat and pads were a better fit than his own. It wasn’t long before Bobby found the middle of the bat and the boundary. Drummy was finding it a little tougher and was first to go, caught at gully, but not before being dropped twice. Bobby entertained us with some tremendous strokes on his way to fifty off thirty eight balls.
Dalts was starting to look a little more settled and stroked a lovely straight drive and then a sweep for four, before picking out the man at deep square leg attempting to repeat the stroke. Tony took his time to get going but provided a steadying hand as Bobby continued to play his shots, attempting several reverse sweeps without much success. Clearing the rope was obviously more important than trying to reach a hundred as the spinners came in for some treatment. The pick of his shots for me was a slog/sweep, in true Steve Waugh style, for six over the long mid-wicket boundary towards the school.
Bobby was eventually out 12 short of his first century for the first team but had taken us to within reach of victory. Tony was left to complete his fifty in an innings that seemed to improve as it went on and with it a good win for the Forfs.
