Match report
The sun was shining as we arrived at Langloan for the opening SNCL match of the season. Nobody was quite sure how to find the ground as it had been a few years since we'd played in Coatbridge, last years match having been a total wash out. Thanks to TomTom Weed the route to the ground was easy to follow and conveniently passed a certain fried chicken outlet that’s often frequented on such away trips. Watty had arrived first at the ground after a celebrity appearance on the radio, so got the last parking spot, the rugby match that was due to start at the same time as the cricket causing some congestion.
Drummy won the toss and we decided to have a bowl first, the wicket looked decent but possibly a little slow. We got off to a good start with both openers dismissed early and when a good off-cutter did for Mohammed, Drumps were struggling at 22 for 3. A good shout first ball to McLaren was turned down and he and the pro staged a recovery. McCarthey looked in good order and played some positive shots using the aerial route to find the boundary, a few of which were agonizingly close to fielders. The bowling wasn’t good enough with too many wides helping the home sides run rate. The fielding wasn’t much better with a few fumbles and dropped catches allowing the batsmen to relieve some pressure. When McCarthey was out caught at point off the bowling of Umi, there was still a chance to restrict them to a reasonable total.
Overseas amateur Greg Lewis batted well and put on important runs with Mclaren and Stevenson. Umair bowled well and picked up another wicket in his spell, AB returned and bowled better in his second spell than his first. The contribution of extras to the Drumps total accounted for them passing 200 rather than a total of around 170.
After tea the wind seemed to have picked up a little and the chill in the air could be felt in the unsheltered parts of the ground. This curtailed the enthusiasm for laps and a seat in the sun in front of the pivi was the preferred option. Howie making us all jealous with the Magners and ice. Unfortunately Bobby’s good form of the week before didn’t have a chance to be seen as he was cleaned up early. Tony hung around for a while but found scoring difficult on the sluggish wicket. It wasn’t long before we were behind the run rate and Rhino decided it was time to be more positive. Tony was out caught and Umi followed shortly after, never looking settled at the crease. A patient knock from Drummy allowed Rhino to keep things moving along but we were never really up with the required rate. Drummy was out caught after miss-queuing a waste high full toss and Nelly Martin didn’t stay for long. Chic and AB were out bowled to leave us in real trouble, AB somehow managing to be bowled off-stump round his legs! It was now left to Rhino to try and score most of the runs himself and take us to an unlikely victory. He hit a few trademark blows to the rope and was fortunate to be dropped in the deep by Z Mohammed before clearing him for six a few balls later. With only six or so overs left when I strode out to the middle Rhino had to play some big shots, unfortunately he didn’t quite get hold of one and Mohammed made no mistake second time round, Rhino out for an excellent 111.
We gave ourselves too much to do with the bat after a lackluster performance in the field. The batting display was entirely disappointing with only 2 people in double figures and no one able to hang around to support Rhino in what turned out to be a solo effort to conquer the Drumps total.
