Match report
After a visit to Pizza Express and an early night we awoke feeling refreshed to another sunny day in Glasgow. The remnants of Saturday night in Glasgow were blowing around the streets as we strolled down to the Social for brunch. With the odd red feather causing some torment to one of our number. We arrived at the ground at the same time as the squad that traveled from Dundee and in plenty time for a good warm up. The warm up was far from good as the lack of equipment was matched by the lack of enthusiasm after Drummy won the toss and we batted first.
Drummy took up the opening spot with Finbar but John perished early when he offered up an easy catch. Tony and Pete then put together a good partnership and saw off the openers. The slow bowlers coming on signified an increase in the tempo with both playing a few more aggressive shots. Just as we started to put some pressure on the fielding side a tight run was called for, which resulted in Tony being run out. It was a close call and opinion was divided on the validity but Tony thought he made it.
Ben’s return for the Forfs was cut short by a little knick behind and AB was out to a sharp catch close in. At 3 down we were looking in a bit of bother. Drummy was still there and he and Steve put together a partnership. Drummy was out just short of his fifty and Blackie wasn’t looking in much bother until he was a bit flat footed to one and was out LBW. Asif batted very sensibly and a few lusty blows from Dean towards the end helped us along to a reasonable total.
After the exceptional West teas it was down to Sam and I to open the bowling and find an early breakthrough. The wicket had played well, there was a little for the bowlers and good pace onto the bat for the batsmen. A missed catch at point was not what we needed in the early stages, fortunately the next ball the opener was out LBW. Sam then started to find a bit more rhythm and was getting the ball to swing nicely. An excellent low catch at slip from Finbar saw the other opener dispatched. Then another couple of cracking deliveries saw Sam pick 2 more important wickets. The early blows put the pressure on the batting side and we knew we had a good chance. AB came into the attack and enjoyed running down the hill, he too found a bit of movement and made life difficult for the batsmen. Sam finished his spell picking up a fourth wicket and AB chipped in with another two important ones in a very tight spell.
When Steve came on there were quite a few runs left to get and not that many wickets left. A good in-ducker saw Gilchrist bowled early in his innings and it was all but over for West. Blackie came on and was swept well a couple of times, with Ben giving us a chariots of fire like slow motion sprinting round the boundary. Steve picked up another wicket and when Cameron was caught at deep mid-wicket the game was won.
A good victory was earned defending a smallish total, on what was quite a good pitch and quick outfield. Good to see Sam finding a bit of form, his wickets proving vital in this win.
