Match report
It was a late arrival at King GeorgeV playing fileds after the obligatory circumnavigation of Renfrew, nothing much to see really. Those that were able to follow TomTom and arrived on time were starting to get warmed up. After a long hard week at work Richie was the last to arrive with just enough time to get the Twix wrappers on before the game started. There was some speculation that his flight into Glasgow from Renfrew Ontario had been delayed. It was later confirmed that it was in fact just two miles down the road that he had been working all week. Mystery!
The pitch looked a little suspicious and after experiences last year we thought it was likely to help the bowlers. We lost the toss and had a bat. It was patience and watchfulness that would be important and with wickets in hand we should get a decent total. The game started late after some delaying tactics from Renfrew and even then only nine men took the field. This allowed Drummy and Nige to take advantage of the gaps and get the scoreboard moving. Nige was lucky not to be out early when he was caught off a no ball, trying an extravagant pull through mid-wicket to a ball that was outside off.
With Tony not fancying number 3 it was Howie and Pete that were the men for the job and put their experience and technique to good use on a very difficult batting track. If the slow bounce and movement weren’t enough to cope with it wasn’t long before a few were popping from short of a length and the odd one keeping low. Howie was out leg before to a shooter that pitched back of a length but didn’t get above ankle height. It’s not often you see Howie smiling after he’s been given out.
The sun shone for a while and we bathed in the warmth sitting sheltered from the wind, if you could find a seat of course. We also enjoyed the first of 3 sets of buzzers in our innings, always a good sign to get some buzzers. Drummy was in obdurate mood and wasn’t phased when he was struck by a couple of “spitting cobras”. He and Tony put together a good partnership and although the run rate was slow in the tough conditions, it was important to have wickets in hand. Tony was out caught and Umair decided that his first job would be to run out the skipper. A quick single straight to gully did the trick nicely.
Chic and Umi then put on a few runs for the fifth wicket and moved the score along at a decent pace. Not for the first time during our innings a wicket fell at an inopportune moment and put the brakes on. It was then a steady tumble towards that last few overs. Blackie came in and made a few handy runs at the end.
An opening burst from Gally was rewarded with a wicket but cut short by an injury. A tear in the chewy caramel layer of his right leg meant that Howie had to finish the over. Another wicket fell early to give us an ideal start and Sam replaced Howie after his five ball spell. Sam continued his excellent form and picked up 3 wickets in his spell. Another couple of tough chances were put down and Umi came on and bowled another good spell, also picking up 3 wickets in a miserly spell. Blackie had his reward for a tight spell of bowling and the Twix finished the innings with his second catch of the game off the bowling of Umi.
Verdict: Full 12 points was needed and that’s what we got. It was a difficult day for the batsmen but a good confidence building win.
