Penicuik v Forfarshire Cricket Club 1st XI on Sat 14 Jul 2007 at 1pm
Forfarshire Cricket Club Won 28 runs

Match report After a warm and sunny week more torrential rain threatened the fixture at Kirkhill. The mopping up effort was well underway when we arrived and the sunshine and wind helped to dry things out. The pessimism of the opposition was somewhat strange but the umpires decided that a 1.20pm start was necessary. The extra 20 minutes making absolutely no discernable difference to conditions.

It was a good toss to win and Drummy obliged, which meant we would have a bat first on what was a surprisingly dry and cracked surface. An excellent opening stand of 55 was put together by Howie and LJ. With LJ playing some good attacking strokes to find the rope. The weather had started to close in a bit and there was a brief shower but it thankfully blew past quickly.

The good work was all but undone when they both departed within the space of a few balls. Injudicious shot selection and a bit of “do as I say not as I do” from Howie and surprisingly LJ being bowled by what looked a straightforward full ball. Miersy found the going a little tough and was out caught but Pete looked to still be in good touch and put on a good partnership with Umi.

An important 86 runs for the fourth wicket saw us into a good position and looking for a score of around 220. The return of Hutton to the attack proved crucial as he bowled Umi and had Tony caught. We started to lift the momentum into the last 10 overs but another cluster of wickets fell that put the brakes on. Pete and Neily falling with the score on 178 and AB out an over or so later meant we were 181 for 8. This left quite a few overs to be batted but Chic and Sam did a great job, Chic finishing with a flurry and a tanner over cow corner. This took us just past 200, which was a good total but once again not as many as we should have made.

After tea the cloud had cleared a bit but the wind was still quite strong. Good opening spells were rewarded with 2 wickets, a good return catch for Samy T and an LBW for Q. With the pro and amateur still at the crease then anything could happen. The pressure was constantly applied to the batsmen with some tight bowling and the introduction of Umi and Howie kept the run rate down. The bowlers were backed up by a good sharp performance in the field and soon the required rate was over 6.

Umi picked up the pro and completed an excellent spell, Howie went unrewarded for his equally miserly effort. The amateur had to start trying to take some risks and attempted to take on the spin of Miers only to perish at the hands of Drummy, who had the bails off in a flash. Penicuick, youngster Coleman then changed his approach and started to hit them quite well but they had left themselves far too much to do with 12’s required off the last few overs. Miersy finished off the innings with a good spell and the win was ours. Verdict: Good team effort solid performances all round.
