Match report
The loss of the toss wasn’t much of a disappointment as we got to make use of a decent looking batting track. There was some speculation that 250 would be a par score. It was a welcome change to see the sun shining and no dark clouds on the horizon. There was, however, a strong breeze from the west that kept the temperature down, but it was the best day for cricket for a couple of months.
LJ and Howie opened up and played and missed a few times as the new ball swung around early on. Howie looked set to bat the whole innings and LJ played a few attacking shots to find the rope a few times. LJ was first out when he eventually edged one behind and was caught by the Scotland keeper Smith. Pete then joined Howie and put on a partnership worth over 60. It was a partnership of contrast with Pete’s attacking strokes and Howie’s diligent defence. Howie hadn’t long made it to double figures when Pete was out caught having hit one a little too close to mid-wicket.
Cam’s innings was brief but Tony picked up where Pete had left off and put on nearly 80 for the fourth wicket with Howie. After completing a patient fifty we really wanted Howie to see it through to the end but the return of West to the attack saw him caught behind. Tony was next to go when he played one on and was out for a well made 45. There was the usual clatter of wickets towards the end but we managed to get ourselves to a reasonable total.
The early wicket of Reid gave us a good start but the other opener was intent on playing some shots. We knew they had been bowled out a few times recently and they all enjoy playing the big shots, so there was always a good chance of picking up wickets. Sam came in for a little tap and he was replaced by LJ who also found it hard early on. Having taken the shine off the ball I was removed from the attack to let the spinners do their work. Umi bowled well from the start and was rewarded with 2 important wickets. It was then time for Andy “The Wickets” Wallace to have a bowl and he immediately dispatched the Aberdeenshire pro.
The pressure was now on the batsmen and it was important for us to keep it that way. A good partnership then developed and a couple of changes of bowling were forced. Miersy couldn’t find the same turn that Umi had and Howie managed to keep things tight for a couple of overs. The turning point came once Chic had woken up. He made up for a few misfields when he turned the game with a brilliant diving catch at mid-wicket. This gave Howie the vital partnership breaking wicket of Aberdeen’s skipper and we were back on top.
This prompted another change by Drummy as LJ was brought on and once again the change had an immediate result with their number six caught by Umi at point. Pete was on a roll and Umi came in to the attack to complete an exceptional spell of bowling. He quickly picked up another 2 wickets as did LJ and the victory was sealed. Verdict: a vital win that will need to be repeated.
