Match report Forfarshire welcomed Stenhousemuir in the quarter final stage of the Scottish group of the Cockspur Cup on a pleasant afternoon at Forthill.

The team indulged in the usual pre match warm up consisting of putting out the rope, fixing the sightscreens, pushing off the covers, sorting out the scorebox, gathering the teas, putting out the fielding discs and then eventually getting changed. One wonders what the groundsman does to earn his keep?

It is any wonder there is any energy left after that, but eight members of the team still saw fit to practice their bowling skills in the middle before the game and this correspondent could only think that the Cockspur Cup consisted of 8 bowlers bowling 6 overs each given the standard of some of the prospective bowling” on view.

Drummy lost the toss and Forfarshire were inserted on a slow looking pitch and his own pre match preparations were somewhat hindered by the fact that the visiting lady scorer could not gain access to the pavilion to answer an urgent call of nature. Whilst strapping on his pads, Drummy was heard to be calling the club steward and club president to help the situation but to no avail and unfortunately the young lady had to visit a toilet in deepest, darkest Broughty Ferry to fulfil her needs.

Drummy still appeared to be thinking about toilets when he drained one through to the keeper and the Forfs were one down early doors. Tony carried on the toilet theme and played like the inside of a cesspit and it was no surprise when he to walked back to the pavilion. In keeping with the day, Howie was in the newly opened toilets when the next wicket fell and Umir went in ahead of him at number four. Umir and Neil started to slowly rebuild the innings in the face if some good visiting bowling and it was unfortunate just as Umir was starting to get on top of the bowling that he holed out for a fine 26. Howie was thankfully free to go in next for his first bat for the Forfs this year. Neil had been batting well and looked like going through the whole innings when he was just run out for 40. His sensible innings laid the platform for the final Forfs total and once again he looked solid in his opening spot.

This gave the club’s youth policy a chance to flourish and with a combined age of 97 Clark and Howie started to look for quick singles……not! Howie was soon out for 22 playing a one handed late reverse sweep and Gally came to the wicket. Gally’s dress for the day has to be mentioned and in particular his brown tights. Apparently designed to keep the cold at bay, they were certainly a strange looking garment and one could only think that he had bought them over the internet and his colour was not working. He looked like a walking Twix. Clark followed the skipper’s instructions to take his time by waiting until his second ball before going over the top. A brisk 22 and the standard dismissal of caught at long on followed. You would have thought that someone now approaching his late sixties would know better.

Gally played superbly for his 41 and marshalled the tail superbly to a final total of 209 for 9. Blackie unfortunately got run out by a direct hit and Quinno also fell the same way amongst conjecture that his new kit was weighing him down and in particular the shiny titanium grill on his helmet. Sammy helped Gally see out the remaining overs and added some crucial runs.

Tea was enjoyed by all apart from the visiting scorer who seemed intent on letting everyone know that she was unhappy about the lack of toilet facilities on her arrival. The club committee held an emergency session late on Sunday night and have agreed that for future games a bucket and toilet roll will be provided for all women visitors.

A fine tea of sausage rolls, filled sandwiches and pakoras provided by Dundee’s finest Indian restaurant The Gulistan were enjoyed by all and in particular the brown tight wearing Irishman. He enjoyed them so much that he failed to get changed in time for the start of the Stenny innings and he had to change on the sidelines and his attire certainly caused astonishment amongst the visitors. Some young children were also visibly shaken by the experience – along with the umpires.

Stenny’s reply started well and Sam and Quinno’s best efforts were to no avail. Younf Aman was called into the attack and quickly took wickets with successive balls and the Forfs were back in the game. Further tight bowling form the human Twix helped to raise the run rate and the introduction of Blackie and Umir saw the run rate climb still further. Another couple of wickets fell and the dangerous Gardener came to the crease. He hit a couple of lusty blows but when Umir held on to a very sharp return catch the game was all but over. Umir finished up with five wickets in a fine all round performance and the other bowlers also supported him well. The fielding was also pretty sharp and overall Forfarshire can be happy with this display.

So it is on to an away semi final against Poloc which was the scene of a fine Scottish Cup victory last season so hopefully the boys can progress to the final and edge towards a visit to Lords in September.

The Man Of The Match Award went to Umir for his fine batting and brilliant bowling. He wins a lifetime supply of pakoras courtesy of the Gulistan.

A bus will be running to Poloc next week courtesy of TS Tours. Pick up points will be at Ted’s House, the club, Freda’s to collect Dave, Gally’s girlfriends, Tay Ferries and the BP Bullionfield. Cost will be £39.99 including picnic lunch, a six pack of Fosters and an Art Deco lamp.
