Match report
The monsoons of Wednesday made way for sunny skies on Thursday and so the longest day brought fine weather for the Two Counties Cup Semi Final between Brechin and Forthill XI at Guthrie Park.
Upon inspection, it became clear that the heavy rain of the previous day had ensured a far from perfect batting strip, indeed a spongy mess was maybe an apt description. The more experienced members of the Forthill team immediately predicted that a par score would be around 100 and anything over that would likely be a winning total. It was interesting to note that Steve turned up on the longest day wearing a duffle coat which bemused his team mates somewhat. He suggested it was raining when he left his house that morning, but the heavy weight coat still seemed a little over the top.
After a lost toss, we found ourselves making first use of the track and it immediately became apparent that batting would not be easy. Clark and Stephen were quickly back in the hutch and Duffle Coat man and Andy came together for what proved to be the match winning partnership. They punished any loose bowling that came down and played the good balls into the gaps to keep the score ticking. When Andy fell for an excellent 38 it seemed that the game was already slipping away from Brechin. To give them credit they stuck to their task and in the closing overs a number of wickets fell at regular intervals as new batsmen found it hard to come in and play shots.
Unperturbed, Steve continued to play well and was not out at the end having completed a fine half century and this saw Forthill XI through to an excellent total of 121 for 9 in difficult conditions.
Asif and Kevin opened up the bowling and as in recent games they bowled very well. Scoring off Asif was particularly difficult and Brechin soon found themselves behind the clock. Wickets started to fall and only a fine innings of 40 from Beaton kept
Brechin in the hunt. When he was out to a fine catch from Mo on the long on boundary the game was all but over and no other Brechin batsman managed to reach double figures. John came on and again cleaned up the innings with three wickets and it is good to see him bowling so well and getting reward for his efforts.
Special mention needs to be made of Simmy who wicket kept well under difficult conditions and managed the troops expertly. Midweek games seem to suit him for some reason…..
His offspring had an off night and perhaps he needs to learn not to keep the company of a certain Sam Booka the night before a big semi final.
Final mention goes to Ian who once again sported his multi purpose Pleasure Aid finger device. Apart from its’ standard use, he showed that it also has a 100% guarantee to catch everything that comes your way as demonstrated with a sharp clutch at slip and a comfortable take under a high one at mid wicket. Pleasure Aid devices are available from Ian’s bag for free.
The Man Of The Match Award was a foregone conclusion and Steve was the deserved recipient following his fine 55 not out and a tidy spell of bowling. He rather aptly receives a matching glove and scarf set courtesy of sponsors Miller’s of Broughty Ferry and no doubt he will be wearing them along with his lucky duffle coat at the final in July.
Lastly, following their unveiling at this fixture, a further item has been placed on the team clothing list. New “Skippers” pants are available for order from the club shop priced at £4.99 (s/m/l/xl) and £6.99 (Simmy size). These rather fetching Y front type pants come in a lovely navy and sky combination with little repeat motif designs which resemble a mix of flowers and aliens.
