Forfarshire Cricket Club Forfarshire v Arbroath United on Sat 31 May 2008 at 1pm
Forfarshire Cricket Club Won 8 wickets
Match report
It was another absolutely crackin’ day at Forthill. The ground looked a picture until all the players turned up and ruined it. As the press coverage hinted at there was much excitement about the visit of Arbroath. So much so that Watty rolled up at half twelve unsure of who we were actually playing. With the rope put out in record time and the rugby ball rescued from the hands of a gang of street youths we were able to start the warm up. It was a good toss to win, which we didn’t, so it was on with the bowling shoes.
Once again it was a quick outfield, TC opened the bowling because Howie had forgotten his bowling laces. The first few overs were uneventful until TC induced an edge off Parker. This sparked McGill into life as he started to play a few shots. The openers were whipped out of the attack and Umi Golden Arm came on and produced another wicket in his first over.
Luckily Howie had his fielding laces on and a good pick up and throw hit the stumps to run out CJ, the pro. This was a big breakthrough and put the pressure on Arbroath. Once the sports mixtures had been passed round and the pros and cons of new laces were discussed, Watty came on for a spell of bowling. It wasn’t until the introduction of the human waste disposal into the attack that the next wicket came. AB found a good line and length and picked up 3 quick wickets in an excellent spell. Showing what can be achieved on an empty stomach.
With the backbone of their batting broken we needed an inspirational bit of fielding from TC to find the next wicket. A great pickup and throw in the covers and a direct hit left the batsmen well short of his ground. There were several other direct hits throughout the game, which proved all the fielding practice we hadn’t been doing was paying dividends.
Howie The Closer was brought on to polish things off with 2 cheap wickets. A very below par score for Arbroath was testimony to an excellent fielding and bowling performance.
AB was first in for tea and with no more bowling to be done soon equalled his own record of 4 platefuls of food and a Mr Kipling’s cake or two. Howie and Watty got us off to a good start again with another fifty opening stand. A good opening spell by Parker wasn’t supported at the other end and our run rate was always good. The introduction of CJ into the attack slowed things down and produced the much needed wicket for Arbroath. It’s not often that you see a batsmen caught at fine leg but that was how Watty met his demise. A ball he could have hit into the school on another day found the safe hands of Parker at Fine leg.
Catches at fine leg seem to be like buses, you don’t see any for ages then 2 appear at the same time. Howie conspired to hit a long hop to fine leg as well and was the second and only other wicket to fall. Most people would be disappointed if they were struggling to score more runs than their age but with 3 scores in the forties in a row for Howie, it actually makes for a healthy average.
Thankfully Coops hit his long hop where it deserved to go and saw us through with an excellent fifty. Another comfortable win but can we do 5 in a row?
