Forfarshire Cricket Club Forfarshire v West Lothian on Sat 14 Jun 2008 at 1pm
Forfarshire Cricket Club Won 9 wickets
Match report
A cool breeze was blowing as the warm up got under way, but a quick check of the wicket and outfield confirmed that it would be preferable to bat first, even though we might be fielding in the cold later. Naturally we didn’t really have the choice in this matter as Drummy lost yet another toss and we were asked to bowl first.
Sammy was quickly into his rhythm, dismissing the menacing Hamilton with his 3rd delivery. At the other end, Richie, fresh from his 2 weeks at the world street performing championships, was not so quick to find his rhythm, giving the umpire plenty of exercise, not many of the 18 runs off his spell came off the bat though. Sammy took another 2 wickets to leave West Lothian struggling at 18 for 3.
Unfortunately our change bowlers couldn’t keep the pressure on and some good running between the wickets, together with too many loose balls, saw pro Van Wyk and McOscar build a partnership of 131 to bring them back into the game. Several run out opportunities were missed and our fielding was not as sharp as it has been recently, and will need to be better for next week’s big game. Eventually they tried one single too many to dead-eye Howie who threw down the stumps to have McOscar run out for a well hit 77. By this time Van Wyk, who had been playing second fiddle, and was within spitting distance of his half century, started to cut loose. Time to bring on Howie, whose little dibbly dobblers seemed to confuse the pro, who thought he was a spinner and attempted a reverse sweep, straight into Drummy’s gloves. This ended West Lothian’s hopes of posting over 250 and we bowled and fielded a lot better in the last 10 overs to restrict them to 222 for 6. We played through some very heavy rain showers which was a new experience for Tom, and allowed Bobby to show off his extraordinary sliding prowess out on the boundary, cutting off 2 certain fours with one handed dives.
If you look at the scorecard and think there must be a mistake because Watson only bowled 7 overs, your eyes are not deceiving you, he was taken off by the skipper but not brought back. Drummy will be censored at the weekly selection meeting tonight to ensure that this does not happen again.
Sandwiches were a bit sparse at the tea table and Beast has been warned that his future consumption will need to be less than or equal to the number he provides.
The word was that West Lothian’s normal opening bowlers were missing, and this seemed to be confirmed when the opener hobbled up and bowled slower than Howie. Watson started to use his feet and hit a few good shots, looking good on his way to 33 before trying to hit another over the top and being caught and bowled by a surprised and relieved looking bowler.
This brought our ‘second pro,’ Tom, to the crease, and West were soon to regret this sledge as any loose bowling was deposited over the boundary, and over the wall on a couple of occasions. There was never a lot of doubt that TC would notch his second consecutive century, a tremendous 102 not out off only 79 balls. At the other end Howie had been struggling for timing early on but started to match Tom’s scoring rate later in the innings to notch 76 not out, the second week in a row that this pair have put together a match winning partnership and finished the game with plenty overs to spare. The boys were delighted with this as it gave them extra time to iron their shirts, do their hair, and apply beauty products before the much anticipated Cheese & Wine party in the clubhouse after the game.
This sets us up nicely for the 2nd versus 3rd clash against Aberdeenshire who were surprisingly beaten last weekend. To save space in the changing rooms only the top 4 should bring their pads, helmets, gloves and bats, the rest of the team should just arrive in their whites. In a further economical move, Watson will set his alarm clock for 12.45 and then call Drummy to see if we are batting or bowling, before deciding whether to drive up with his pads on.
