Forfarshire Cricket Club Forfarshire v West of Scotland on Sat 05 Jul 2008 at 1pm
Forfarshire Cricket Club Won 6 wickets
Match report
It was crunch time after two disappointing defeats in a row and the visit to Forthill of West of Scotland, one of the teams above us in the league. It would be a chance to have revenge for our defeat at the start of the season in Glasgow. Once again the pitch looked good and the outfield fast, great day for a bat. The inevitable happened with 6 lost tosses in a row, so we bowled first.
It was a slow and cautious start by both batsmen with neither looking to apply any pressure. The fielding was sharper than the previous week, which wouldn’t have been hard, but there were still too many bad balls being bowled. No success for the openers this week and it was more of the same when Dougie and AB came into the attack, AB eventually settled onto a good line and length.
Runs were coming too easily for West and we needed to break the partnership. It took a good one handed return catch by Umi to find the first wicket. Robinson, the pro, had looked dangerous in our previous encounter but was happy just to work the ball around early in his innings. Umi then picked up the crucial wicket when Robinson misjudged one and Howie took a good low catch at mid-off.
This helped to slow the scoring rate and the new batsmen was finding it hard against the spin of Mohammed and Watson. After a period of consolidation West had to try and push things along. This only led to the demise of Lockhart for 92 and put pressure on the new batsmen to score quickly. Early signs of their intention were obvious when Harris hit Howie back over his head for six. After that Howie found good areas and Coops came on and bowled well. It was difficult for the batsmen to find boundaries off the slow bowlers. Coops used his variation well and deservedly picked up a couple of wickets.
At tea we were quite pleased with the total but knew that it wouldn’t be easy against their bowling. Goudie started well as expected but there were a few loose ones from McNulty. It was a third blob for Rhino in a row, given out caught behind when it looked to most like it hit his pad. TC strode out in confident mood and looked to be positive early, dispatching anything loose to the rope. Howie was cleaned up by a good one and Bobby came in to try and rebuild with Coops.
With the score on 71 Bobby was also cleaned up and things were looking a bit more difficult. The situation didn’t seem to phase Craig, who was making his league debut but looked very relaxed. Coops passed fifty in good time as the partnership of 71 took us close to victory, Craig scoring 24 very handy runs and proved a good foil to Coops’ hard hitting. Umair had his sensible hat on and batted cautiously allowing Coops to mount a real onslaught of the bowling. His hundred came up in 79 balls and was thoroughly enjoyed by everyone at the ground. Particular entertaining were the three sixes in an over, which made a bit of a mess of the spinners figures and can be enjoyed over and over in the video section.
Somehow Umi only managed 11 runs of the 74 run partnership but had a front row seat to one of the best innings seen at Forthill. Coops finished the game in style with four from each of the first four balls of McNulty’s over (which can also be enjoyed on the video, particularly after McNulty’s unnecessary throw that struck Umi) and clinching victory with nearly 10 overs to spare.
