Match report
The sun made a welcome appearance just in time for us arriving at the ground and the rain clouds had moved off to Edinburgh. There had been heavy overnight rain and further rain in the morning, which left the ground a bit wet. Thankfully it was drying out well and play started on time. Sid was off to the Test match in Leeds so Candles came in as a late suby scorer, and did a grand job too, although not as colourful as Sid’s scorebook.
After winning the toss and choosing to bowl an early dropped catch was not what was required. After a series of dropped catches at first slip there were a few raised eyebrows to see Howie still in that position. This soon changed as Wally replaced Howie after Dougie found a good edge and a simple chance was spilled.
Not for the first time this season we made life difficult for ourselves as the opening batsmen made the most of his lifeline and completed a good century. The bowling was good on the whole but the slowness of the wicket wasn’t helping the seam bowlers. There hasn’t been much joy for the seamers at Forthill this year but the lack of preparation due to the rain meant the pitch was slower than normal and very flat. There was a little swing with the new ball but it took a run out to get the first breakthrough.
Umi then came on and bowled a series of full bungers that the batsmen couldn’t profit from and trapped Sattar LBW with one of them. Another 2 wickets fell to run outs and Watty bowled well later in the innings to pick up a nice three for. Dougie replaced Howie and picked up the only wicket for the seamers with a good catch from Wally in front of the scorebox.
The outfield was much slower than normal so their total of 215 was worth a few more than that. It wasn’t going to be an easy run chase but with the lack of experience in the bowling and an injury cloud over pro Khan, we were in confident mood. Howie was looking good but was first to depart for 20. Watty continued to be positive but perished when he miscued one to mid-on charging down the track to the bowler. After having taken 9 runs off the over already it did seem a little rash. Tom looked in no trouble as usual and Bobby managed to find yet another way to get out when he was run out by a good piece of fielding by Nafees.
It's always a good sign for us when the fielding side give up some extra runs with overthrows. So the dressing room could hardly contain themselves when a Double Buzzer was scored after two comical pieces of fielding allowed the batsmen to turn a tight single into an easy three. This proved to be the case as any doubts we had at 106 for 3 there were forgotten. Wally played well for his 19 and together with Tom took the score to 168. Umi was out to a pretty poor looking LBW but was possibly lucky to have survived an earlier shout.
AB came in and made a brisk 19 to see us through, although he did look a little nervous about scoring too many runs and denying Tom his 3rd century. They managed to time things well and Tom brought up his hundred and the victory target with the final 4 of the innings. It was a well paced innings without even a sniff of a chance offered with a some of his usual classy strokeplay.
