Stenhousemuir v Forfarshire Cricket Club 1st XI on Sat 26 Jul 2008 at 1pm
Forfarshire Cricket Club Won 78 runs

Match report It was our first trip to the Tryst for a few years and several members of the teams’ first visit. After a short debate about the best route to take and a quick look at the map we set off. This meant we were a bit late leaving Forthill and there was little confidence of all the cars finding the ground, never mind on time. Our fears were realised when we couldn’t get off the motorway at the right place and ended up passing Stenhousemuir. Some frantic phone calls were made to instruct the others on how to get back on track. This didn’t help Blackie who ended up back at Stirling and somehow Wally’s car ended up at Grangemouth.

Drummy had arrived on time and was waiting patiently on the rest of us, so he was able to redirect Wally away from the oil refinery. Blackie followed his instructions precisely and eventually arrived, but hadn’t had time to stop for food and was already complaining about being hungry.

The unusual warm up of Frisbee throwing was duly carried out in the short time left to prepare. The pitch looked a little unusual, not much grass and mostly hard earth, which left Drummy a little unsure of what to do at the toss. This almost guaranteed that he would win the toss. It tends to play quite well at Stenny and as it turned out it was a good toss to win and bat first.

There was some good carry to the keeper for the overseas amateur from Trinidad, which seemed to be to Howie’s liking. He looked in a particularly positive mood crashing some square cuts to the boundary. Tom came in and was hitting them well and found the rope on a number of occasions. He hasn’t offered many chances throughout the season but benefited from 2 dropped catches in the space of a few overs. This didn’t deter his positive mood and when a difficult stumping chance was missed down leg side we could see it was his day. A big partnership of 156 set a brilliant platform for a big score. Coops looked well on course for another century but eventually perished to the bowling of Gardiner for 92 from just 85 balls.

It was a positive and clean hitting Bobby Cannon that came in next and carried on the good work. A sweetly struck straight drive for six over the bowlers head was the highlight of a wonderful cameo innings of 42 from 35 balls. The partnership reached 90 when Bobby was eventually caught in the deep. It took a good catch at long-on, with at least a 5 second hang time, to remove him. It was a tough situation for Tony with only a few of overs left and he only managed to hit his first ball straight to the fielder in the covers. Howie completed what must surely be one of his finest centuries. Carrying his bat for the 50 overs it was a well paced, craftsman like innings, which featured good defence and some excellent hitting. This formed the backbone of an imposing total and our highest of the season.

Blackie inhaled more than his fair share of scones and jam at tea, much to AB’s horror. Then it was down to the business of bowling. Both batsmen were trying to be positive and took advantage of any loose stuff. Gally started well with a few tight overs but Dougie couldn’t find his line and length so I was called into action earlier than was hoped. It was a humid and overcast day so we expected there would be a bit of swing. There was an early chance just evaded the finger tips of Wally at Mid-on. With both batsmen batting out of their crease and prepared to take a few steps down the track Drummy stood up to the stumps. This has worked well this year and did the trick to unsettle the batsmen. It wasn’t long before another chance was offered to Wally at mid-on, which he gladly pouched.

The pro Thyssen has been in good form and we knew his would be a key wicket. He struck the ball well and looked to be aggressive whenever possible. He took a few from one of Gally’s overs so he was replaced with Blackie. The other opener was then caught in two minds and inside edged one onto his stumps, at last a bit of luck! The next man in was cleaned up by a good one without troubling the score. This brought the dangerous Gardiner in and he showed his intent early with a towering six off Blackie that only just carried over Tom’s head at long-on. Blackie had his revenge in the next over picking up the crucial wicket with Drummy completing the catch behind.

This left the pro and overseas amateur with lots to do at 90 for 4. There was a bit of assistance through the air and the pitch wasn’t playing as well as it had earlier. A few tight overs were rewarded with the wicket of Thyssen on the last ball of my tenth over. There was a puff of dust off the wicket and it was all he could do to hit a simple catch to Coops at extra cover. This wicket effectively ended any chance of them passing our total and when Dougie came back on and cleaned up Moses the game was secured.

The seventh wicket partnership brought some respectability to the total and the spinners were brought on to get through a few quick overs. AB was wheeling out a mixture of slow left arm and his normal fast left arm off 4 paces. The biggest coup of the day was when Tony was thrown the ball as seventh bowler. After a bit of foot stamping from Bobby, he had the last laugh as Wally pulled the parachute and let a catch drop just short of him to deny Tony his first wicket of the season.

A good all round performance gave us a comfortable victory in the end. This was exactly what was needed in the run in to the end of season.
